Dave - I had to laugh at this comment. Seriously that's hilarious. Anyway, to Ottke's credit, he also fought a lot of the top super middles before Calzaghe did, most of the time when they were still considered "good" (for what it's worth). Let's not forget that he was considered the world's best super middle, while Joe was #2 for many years.
Too funny. I swear some of Calzaghe's fans live in an alternate reality. It really is great watching them act superior and then make up/distort facts. Good times.
To quote the great Bernard hopkins "Who's KASSSSLAR"
Kessler is not anyone. He hasn't beaten anyone. Why should a win against him count for anything more than a win like say GLEN JOHNSON, THOMAS TATE, or hmm this name is familiar MUNDINE.....

Real answer to your question: Beacause he's german mainly and because he was boring and had a couple of controversial wins.
Ottke had some outstanding wins which some people forget. He even outpointed Glen Johnson without controversy. Heck I guess I watched nearly all Ottkes fights always hoping that he'd get GTFO but of course that never happened. The guy was so elusive and was nicknamed the ghost for a reason.
Resuméwise he might be a notch below Calzaghe, but he's still got an excellent record.
People like to say that he was elusive, but its really isn't the case, and the condition of his face speaks to that fact.
The Lacy fight is really what defined Calzaghe's career and what made him the P4P start and popular fighter he ended up being. Otke doesn't have wins like that, therefore he is not remembered as kindly. Plus Otke had some disputed decisions.
Disputed indicates that there were people that thought he won. There aren't, not even the judges that were paid to score the fights for him.
