Floyd fighting any true 147 lb. fighter is almost guaranteed to go 12. He has to be prepared for that as pretty much his destiny when fighting men who belong at welterweight.
The funny part is that Floyd, who knows the uphill battle a great fighter has to take, relying on his skill against a man much physically stronger, is now attempting to do the same thing to Marquez to gain an advantage. I don't like that. Floyd knows he is the draw, the big name, he's the one with AT&T commercials, who was on Dancing with the Stars, and has a throng of celebrity friends- and so he knows he can set the terms (or try to).
The sad part is I remember when Floyd fought Oscar and he bitched about how the De la Hoya camp wanted a smaller ring, wanted to set the weight, pick the type of glove and dominate every little aspect. Floyd knew it was pretty ****ty to have the deck stacked against him, but he's willing to play the same game when he's in the driver seat.
I don't think Mayweather will have a problem making junior welterweight, or some catch weight between 140-147. I do, on the other hand, think Marquez would not be the same fighter at 147- and it'd almost become a joke of a fight if Floyd makes him pop up two divisions just to get a shot.
This fight is interesting at 140 because it'd be a good place for Floyd to go after Pacquiao when he beats Hatton (assuming he does).
Chump move, if true, from the Mayweather camp. There's a fine line between wanting to take advantage of your draw power and swindling the boxing fans from what could be a very good fight- AT THE RIGHT WEIGHT.

I swear you guys never seem to amaze me with your shortsightedness of boxing.
If you want to be great you have to take great risk.
Not take good risk, and ok risk, but great risk.
Like I said before
Ready or Not, Great Athletes always take advantage of the moment.
Thats makes them great, the ability to do great things when they are not expected or ready 2.
People Consider Mayweather great because when he did at a young age, and who he beat at a young age. the dude fought for 11 years and was a champion for 10 of them...That is a great accomplishment. thats why we called him great because ready or not Floyd took advantage of the moment when the opportunities were presented to him at a young age, when people thought he wasnt ready to do them.
JMM is not a baby, He can fight Floyd at 147 and maybe can win. but i guess he isnt ready to become a truly all time great and take that on a great challenge. who knows...
but The sad truth is that opportunity doesn't knock twice. You can put things off until tomorrow but tomorrow may never come
I wonder did some of these people say that Floyd vs. Oscar would only make sense at 147 instead 154
I wonder did some of these people say that Shane vs. Oscar would make sense at 140 instead of 147
I wonder did some of these people say that Sugar Leonard vs. Hagler would make sense at 154 instead 160.
I know Floyd can make a catchweight or jr. welterweight easily. I don't know what type of fighter Marquez is at 147. There's a line. Eventually you just reach the highest division your body can comfortably fight at- and that's that. Who here thinks because Floyd fought Oscar at 154, he should fight one division higher and take on Pavlik, Abraham or a true middleweight? The idea is absurd.
Marquez is a lightweight and supposedly he's supposed to jump at the chance to fight two divisions above his current weight? Honestly, we should be trying to get Shane to fight Pavlik, and Dawson in with Klitschko and just say **** weight, and the men who fight at each respective weight class.
I simply mean to say there is a limit. I don't feel as if we've seen any reason to suggest that Marquez can be the same fighter, fight at the same level, or offer us the same challenge to Mayweather that makes us excited when their names are paired together at any weight above 140; and even that's a real question mark.
Why not opt for the best possible fight?Last edited by Njord777; 04-12-2009, 08:03 PM.

But I think you haven't explained something:
If Juan Manuel Marquez goes and works out and doesn't dry out, how much will he weigh on fight night? 144? 145? 146?
Now, if Mayweather does the same thing, he will come in at 147? 148? 149?
Help me understand how marquez is at a disadvantage by having the fight at 147. Wouldn't it just be two guys making weight (140) just for the purpose of making weight? Nobody is telling Juan to blow up and be slow.
Also - and correct me if I'm wrong - didn't JuanManuel initially SAY that he would go to welter to fight May?
I look at this as the same fight at 140 as 147. Because the guys are close in size.

When you call somebody out like Marquez did, then you know your gonna have to go by there rules. Mayweather tried to fight DLH for like 5 years, so when he finally got his shot, DLH picked the weight, gloves, ring size, and more stuff to go with that. if Marquez really wanted the fight then he will go to WW and fight Mayweather. PBF is not the one who called out Marquez. if Marquez dont like it then go fight Valero if you got nuts

I believe PAC weighed 142 at the weigh in for the DLH fight. So why cant JMM do the same???
