Mayweather vs. Marquez Negotiations Stalled on Weight

  • Hatton said: "There'll be more pressure to fight Mayweather now from the Americans because, obviously, there's one less big fight out there for Floyd Mayweather now Zab Judah has lost. But a fight with Mayweather has always been very high up the agenda for us; but we still want one or two fights in America before we get to Mayweather. If anything, Judah's loss has make us even more attractive in the marketplace."

But Hatton believes his son needs the experience of fighting abroad before he takes on the super-talented three-division champion Mayweather.

He said: "Richard needs the experience of training aboard for a fight for the very first time, getting used to that, he needs to have the experience of doing everything the American television and media will expect him to do, getting used to the different time zones, fighting in front of an American crowd - all that.

"And I don't want him to have to deal with all that for the very first time and fight someone like Mayweather as well. Richard isn't a big head, he's got no ego on him, and he will tell you himself that Mayweather is the biggest danger out there for him. That's why he wants to fight Mayweather most of all now he's already beaten Kostya Tszyu, who was the No.1 before Ricky beat him. So, when Richard does fight Mayweather I want Richard comfortable with where he's training and everything else that goes with having a big fight in America."

Father and business manager openly admitted they turned down the chance to at least negotiation for a Mayweather fight in 2004. "That was the one fight, style wise, which I thought we needed a few more fights before taking," said father Ray Hatton. "But now Ricky has gone up to the top level with Tszyu and got the big win, there's no-one I wouldn't put him in with and not feel confident that he'd beat."
Okay that's new to me, but it doesn't change the fact that what I wrote is true. He didn't want to fight Hatton in 2005, after the Gatti fight. So what if he did before Hatton had even won a title? The point is that people keep saying that Mayweather wanted a unification fight to get Hatton's lineal title, after the Gatti fight in 2005, and that Hatton turned it down, and that's simply not true. In 2005 Hatton wanted the unification fight, but Floyd wanted to move up and fight Judah instead, and the link I gave proves that.

      • Dave,

you seem like a reasonable guy. And a guy who respects (and remembers) the factual info.

But Hatton turned down the Mayweather fight on at least three occasions.

        1) in 2004 that ray hatton admitted to
        2) in 2005 that Frank warren said he offered it
30 in 2006 after Judah lost and Hatton asked for tune-ups.

I have NO PROBLEMS with Hatton on that. He didn't feel that he was ready. He said 'give me three tune-ups'. He took the three tune-ups, and then took the fight. He kept his word. Even though I found it strange for a reigning champion to ask for tune-ups.

So, i do NOT want you to think i'm slamming hatton. i'm not.

Just correcting the fallacy that Mayweather didn't chase him down. From ray hatton's mouth, they were pursuing Hatton for a fight.

          Huh?
In 2004, before Hatton had even won a title. Not when Hatton was lineal champion in 2005. When Hatton was lineal champion in 2005, Hatton wanted the fight, but Floyd wanted to move up and fight Judah instead.

Hatton was offered a Mayweather fight after the Gatti fight. Frank Warren quote.

And Ray hatton confirms that he wanted tune-ups before taking on mayweather. That was in January '06.

Dave, you just gotta let this one go. The mountain of evidence is against you, playboy.

Judah lost and Floyd offered Ricky a fight in jan '06. Floyd was DESPERATELY looking for opponents back then...remember?

That was when he offered Margarito (true story) the fight. But Tony ALREADY had a date in late Feb against ******* Gomez. that was a ****ty PPV attha Aladdin. But Tony didn't wantto kill the Feb date to take the April 6th date.

              People forget that.

So, they went back to Zab/Don King and renegotiated a lower purse for zab. Which is why Judah got pissed and didn't attend any promo events.

              i'm sure you remember

Does everyone forget that Floyd never fought a WW besides Badimir. The guy wants to fight at 147 but does'nt want to fight anyone who ways 147. It's pathetic. If you the P4P bets you should'nt need advantages. The guy never fights a WW then retires for 2 years because everyone was putting too much pressure on him to fight a welter. Now he comes back 2 years later and still does'nt want to fight a WW. If you can't fight a WW then he should down to 140. plain and simple. Anyone with half a brain can understand this.
Is that 147 by weigh-in weight or fight-time weight?

Maybe Floyd just wants to fight someone that actually weighs the same as him by fight-night.

Then he needs to fight at 140.
