he can start by collecting those belts at welter, being a champion for 4 years or so, and breaking the defenses record.many things can happen though.

But that's pretty doubtful. He probably won't be an ATG, but I think he's a surefire HOF'er. The boxing HOF isn't that hard to get into. Cotto just has to stay relevant for another 2ish years, win one or two big fights and he's a lock.
He already beat mosley, he would have beaten Margarito had he not cheated.
He beat undefeated Quintana before he fought Paul williams. Fighters keep refusing to fight undefeated prospect untill they see someone else beats them. Mosley is the biggest name there and he lost to Cotto. Mayweather biggest challenge was Hatton and Hatton had to come up in weight. Mayweather has more to prove than Cotto, Cotto should be rank higher than Mayweather right now.

That is in no way true. To say Cotto has accomplished more than Mayweather is you just simply being a hater. Let me guess, you just focus on Floyd's career post Gatti?

Floyd at the lower weights is VERY, VERY accomplished. If Floyd never went to 140, he'd still have accomplished more than Cotto right now. Everything at 140 and above is just extra.

And this is coming from a massive Cotto fan.

damn... if cotto retires in a couple years, I doubt he'll get ATG honors.

Depends what you mean by ATG? Cotto's still reaching the prime of his career, who knows what accomplishments he'll reach in the future.

What kills me though is how quick people will throw down the notion of him reaching an all time great status because he lost his 1st fight. People are too fixated with the idea of fighters falling off after losing a fight. The reality is the best fighters will eventually catch an L, but does that mean they don't deserve to stand along with guys like Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Ali, and other ATGs who each have been beaten or KO'd?

Cotto's still young and has much more to prove. He's got potential to be a HOF and ATG if he continues fighting great fighters while winning and losing some. Give him a chance to prove it.

Who did Mayweather beat? Corales, Castillo, both brawlers that have been knocked out many times. mayweather is bigger than Cotto. Can nobody tell me Cotto can't beat Hatton, cause hatton had closed wins vs Collazo and other fighters. If cotto has to beat Mosley, Berto, Clottey, Margarito, and Paull williams to prove himslef so does Mayweather. what cotto can beat them, but Mayweather can't? did Mayweather fought Kosta Tyszu, Juan Manuel Marguez, Eric morales, Marcos antonio Barrera at the smaller weights? No!!! no big names only names fading away.

9 Defenses of the WBC SFW Title. A top 3 SFW of all time. Floyd started his career at 130 and has gone all the way up to 154, how can you even compare. Cotto is bigger than Floyd, Floyd may be a little taller but Cotto is the larger man.

There is seriously no argument for what you're trying to say.
