The usual route for a fighter to take is to earn his shot by working his way up the rankings. Consider the risk-reward ratio for a fighter such as Pacquiao or Marquez taking on a lesser-known challenger. They have to go through the same process, hard training camps, pay the same people, and still make a smaller fight (such as Valero) worth their while. These guys have both earned their current and deserving status as some of the best fighters in the world without cutting corners.

It would be an interesting match-up, if only to gauge Valero's talent, but then there are numerous other fighters they could take on and earn much more money in doing so. Boxing is a business. Add in the fact that Pacquiao and Marquez are closing in on the twilight years of their careers and it should be understandable as to why they only want the biggest, most lucrative fights.

Valero is promising. Nothing more, nothing less. With a few more fights under his belt against quality opposition, Edwin can start making a bigger name for himself. What he's doing is calling out the P4P #1 and #2 fighters on the planet, yet he hasn't proved he is worth it. He does need to earn his place, and this, unfortunately for him, requires getting in the queue and working for it, because there exists a long list of fighters who also want to take on the likes of Pacquiao and Marquez, who are more deserving and bring more to the table.

Beating Valero at this point doesn't do a great deal for either of them. I don't blame Valero for trying, but it's slightly unrealistic. Maybe not so much in a year or two. On the other hand, by then, both Pacquiao and Marquez will possibly be retired!
but when Floyd Mayweather Jr did it/does it then he's ducking the best out there? That's the double standard that I don't like when people talk about fighters. One guy can do it but the other can't? If anything Marquez deserves a bigger fight more than Pacquiao right now. Marquez stepped up & put down two top 10 light weights by KO. Manny beat Diaz at light weight & beat a drained Oscar at 147? some people will argue that Pacquiao past fights were tougher than Diaz and De La Hoya right?

But so was Floyd's before he got to 147 and on top of that the so called weak fighters he fought had titles and by beating them both, ultimately made him the recognize Welter Weight Champ (Something no other current fighter at 147 has done yet). So in actuality he earned the right to fight De La Hoya for 20MIL +& Hatton for 15MIL+ then do what he wants right? Pacquiao is following the same formula and now Marquez but Marquez actually has a good arguement being that he fought Pacquiao
to a stand still & now has beaten 2 top guys in a division Pacquiao didn't test himself in.

I know PBF has nothing to do with this thread but I felt I had to point out how some make excuses for fighters and crucify others. The bottom line is boxing is a sport but also a business, you start out from the bottom and work your way to the top and the whole goal is to become the man and get the best $ deals.

To be honest... Valero is not in the same level with pac and marquez... Valero is sloppy and his punch is just too wide to find the head of JMM. He'll get the first knock out loss. ... just don't do this Valero...you will harm yourself.... pleaseee...

Good test for Valero, hope this fight can happen and Valero and Marquez could duke it out. I would give the edge to Marquez on this one due to his skill level but Valero has a punchers chance. Dont really see Marquez going for this fight though due to the high risk low reward. Glad to see Valero isnt just on the "I want Pacquiao" bandwagon.

Outbox would be an understatement if this fight ever happened, Marquez would take him out.

valero will smash marquez. his power is great. ask de la hoya. he was the one beating the **** out of de la ho while sparring for the paquiao fight. he blacked de la ho's eye and they through him out of the training camp. this is no juan diaz. this man can hit like hell. one shot to marquez chin and its good night.

Why dont they look to fight Nate Campbell? I see Nate beating Marquez in the same fashion that Jr. Jones beat Barrera. By KO! He would KO Marquez due to his ability to close the distance and his activity level in close. He would be too physical!

No hi*******. And you're wrong. One of the many problems with Floyd is that he claims he is the best in these divisions without beating anyone that's worth a **** then cherry picks. Marquez can cherry pick for a fight or two because he went to 135 and BEAT THE TWO BEST GUYS THERE! Plus Manny is fighting the recognized 140lb king at his weight, not making Ricky chase him like Floyd did. Manny never said he was the best LW or WW either

Enough about Floyd. JMM shouldn't take the fight till Valero brings money to the table. I want to see that fight bad too. real bad, Valero only needs 1 shot to break you off. BUT he talks more than fights these days and needs to get his rep developed in the US. I think Marquez fights the winner of pac-hatton. Valero wins the LW tournament is style and the stage is set for a big fight for him late 2009 or early 2010.

I feel what youre saying and thats why Im upset that my boy Guzman cant get a shot but I somewhat understand it. However, I think this situation is different because of the hype factor. Guzman and alot of other previous guys dont have the hype but Valero had alot of hype when he came onto the scene so I do think the reward would be just as high as the risk if he were to win that fight.
