Hatton Sr. Says Ricky Craves the Pound-for-Pound Title

That has nothing to do with the P4P rankings. They are just a hypothetical and subjective measure of a fighter's eliteness at his peak weight divided by the number of pounds at that weight. Lots of P4P #1 fighters had only ever fought at one weight when they had that ranking (e.g. Hopkins, Hagler).
Bob Foster is ranked #17 in The Ring's "100 most powerful P4P punchers of all time" list, but he didn't carry his power up to heavyweight - yet that didn't count against him when that list was compiled, because it's based on a fighter's peak weight.Last edited by Dave Rado; 03-04-2009, 10:51 AM.Comment

No he was ranked #2 behind only Mayweather long before he moved up, and he was moved to #1 only because Mayweather retired. The wins over David Diaz (who was not a top lightweight) and DLH (who was not a top welterweight) made no difference at all. And as I keep pointing out, lots of P4P #1 fighters have only ever fought at one weight.Comment

That has never been the way they have worked. P4P is and always has been defined simply in terms of the eliteness of a fighter divided by the number of pounds at their peak weight. Many P4P #1 fighters have only ever fought at one weight.
In your system Williams would be near the top of the current rankings and Hatton wouldn't be ranked. In fact Hatton is ranked #8, and Williams isn't ranked in the top 10.Comment

Bhop was ranked #1 when he was at Middleweight and had only ever fought at one weight.Because Pac is naturally smaller. Pac is #1 because of the quality of his opposition, impressive performances, and the fact he has been able to move up past his natural weight classes and TAKE BIGGER CHALLENGES which shows how brilliant he is.
If Hatton wins thats great for him and its a good win even though Pac is smaller, but that is not nearly as impressive as stepping up and facing the best guys a division or 2 up above from where he fights. Which is exactly what Pac is doing. What Marquez is doing, what Bhop is doing, what Mayweather did.
Everyone knows Mayweather was a natural 140 pounder but he was so good he could fight at 147 and make more money with no problems. Think about what people would say if Mayweather just sat at 140 and said this is my natural weight Im not gonna fight bigger guys. Sure he had to potshot and wasnt nearly as impressive offensively as he was at lightweight but at least he proved he could do it, he was that gifted.
Hatton has not done that.
When he moved up and beat Tarver, he was only ranked #3.
Ability to move up has absolutely nothing to do with it.
End of story.Comment

But it sealed the deal in everyones eyes, just being Ring's Pound for Pound as great as it is, still has half the people saying no way so and so such be number whatever, after those wins Pac. in everyones eyes became the top fighter in the world across the board.Comment

Based on historical precedent, I think #2 is highly unlikely - I don't think anyone has ever gone that high before immediately after beating the P4P #1 fighter. He would be ranked #3 or #4, IMO, and Pac would be one place lower than him. Marquez, Hopkins and possibly Vasquez would all move up one.Comment

In the case of The Ring's P4P list it represents the concensus opinion of a large number of highly respected boxing experts. Being The Ring's P4P #1 means that most boxing experts consider you to be the world's best fighter currently.
As such it means far more to most fighters than any number of alphabet belts. It's like winning an Oscar for an actor, it means that you are recognised by the experts as being the best.Comment
