I'm just watching the Diaz/Marquez fight again, and after reading a number of morons saying it was just a lucky punch that won it for Marquez, I noticed that he started to land a great counter punch first in round three and it was the exact same punch that would eventually win the fight for him.

You could see that Marquez had been trying to time Diaz as he came in while Marquez was against the ropes. Diaz is great in that he actually has a very good defense while opening up on someone against the ropes. He throws crisp, quick, short combination's of anything up to eight punches then often ducks down into the opponent or skips back out of danger of any counters. He is a very good defensive fighter and also blocks a lot of shots on his gloves.

Anyway, Marquez had obviously seen that when Diaz threw a jab to set up the right hand, he left it a little too long out there with his left eye being a small target over the top. The problem was though it wasn't the type of jab you could counter with the usual slip, counter over the top because of the way Diaz crowded in at the same time. Marquez found a way though to set up a looping right hand while sinking down to protect against the incoming right hand of Diaz. The first shot lands towards the last minute of round three when Diaz backs him into the ropes. He throws a short jab, while readying the right hand, Marquez slips down a little and shoots the right straight over into Diaz face. It was a perfect shot and you could see it hurt Diaz slightly.

Anyway, it is the exact same shot he lands in the ninth that sends Diaz down for the first time and is the shot that really hurt him and won the fight for Marquez. The other shot was the left uppercut of course. I believe this is one of Marquez' greatest punches and is a hugely underrated shot of his. He generates great power with it and can land it from all sorts of interesting angles that the opponent would not think could be landed. He used this same uppercut in the great fight against Jandeang, which also won him that fight.

Either way, what a great fight and what a great fighter. I hope Diaz can get back up after this though as he could still easily be the top dog at 135 after Marquez leaves, if he leaves. He's a fantastic little fighter with a lot of time to readjust after this loss. He could come back even stronger from this one knowing that he had a huge, close battle with an experienced veteran and one of the greats of the sport.
