OK. Well, to answer your question, I think many (not all) of the younger generation of boxing fans probably don't give enough credit to the old-school fighters and are slightly blinded by hype. They are convinced that, when Floyd Mayweather tells them he is 'the greatest who ever lived', he is correct. They adore his flashy persona, the way he throws money around, his "hip hop" or "street" image, etc., and they want to be just like him. They relate to his persona, and the marketing worked perfectly. I will include you here, as your posts come across as having being written by a youngster, possibly in his teens.

Those of us who have followed the sport for a while longer and/or more in-depth tend to recognize why these old-school fighters are fully deserving of their status as "All Time Greats", and having studied the sport for several decades, we hold their achievements in high regard. These are the fighters who current fighters need to live up to. Unfortunately, most of them don't come all that close. Myself, I have been a keen boxing fan since first watching Muhammad Ali in the late 70's when I was a very young kid.

I hope this goes some way to answering your question as to whether or not I give the old-school fighters too much credit. Obviously, I cannot speak for everyone here, but hopefully I speak for some. Also, I recognize Floyd Mayweather's skills. He is/was a very smart fighter, but his achievements do not compare well to those of greats such as Sugar Ray Robinson, who I consider the greatest fighter of all time, and his brash, immature personality leaves something to be desired.

I like the Sugar Hill comment. Current Hip Hop sucks bad. Such a shame how it was bastardized and twisted into it's current form.

          Thanks for the reply,

Yes people are influenced by hype, that includes you and me.It doesnt mean though "old school hype" is better than the "present hype". they are both hypes.I hope we agree in this matter.

"Those of us who have followed the sport for a while longer and/or more in-depth tend to recognize why these old-school fighters are fully deserving of their status as "All Time Greats" - again you and other posters/haters here are placing yourself in your own high horse thinking choosing an old ATG is better than a present ATG. look at your fantasy matchups.

"his brash, immature personality leaves something to be desired." - i guess the personality of a fighter is a big deal for you when ranking your ATG.again floyd fails in this criteria.

Im not saying all old timers arent great but some of them are definitely overated while some of our present greats are underappreciated particularly floyd.

The purpoe of the thread is to show that some old timers are grossly overrated compared with the new ones.

All Floyd needs to do is prove he is great. If he is as great as you say he is, it should be a simple task. For me personally, he hasn't quite done that. However, I say "live and let live". If you think he's the best, then it's not something I have a problem with. The only thing I do have a problem with is when someone thinks everyone else should share their opinion and is wrong if they don't.

Later, my friend. I need sleep. Thanks for the conversation.

Hip Hop is fine, great music, great culture, but Rap sux peanuts. All about bling, money, girls(treated terribly), and perception of who they are. You have great Hip Hop artists out there. Groups that never see the radio because they don't try and appeal to the tools of my generation.

I think it is obnoxious when people confuse Rap with Hip Hop 2 completely different things that happen to have stylistic similarities. Country has a guitar is it considered rock? Metal and Punk both yell are they the same?

And Zulu Nation started it all in Hip Hop, Afrika Bumbata etc. Sorry but I am educated on my Hip Hop, and I hate when people take things at face value. Tons of rappers consider themselves Hip Hop artists and that is just not true.

Hip Hop has several elements Beatboxing, break dancing, turntables, MC, and Graffiti art. Rap is money and materialistic items. Perception of having money. Blackalicious has a song straight burning guys like this called Deception actually.

Sorry for the rant but I think everyone should know about what actual hip hop is. Just like Yes should know why some of the greatest ever get the credit they do deserve. Those men fought everyone and they pushed the sport along. They developed defenses and offenses that fighters do use to this day. They developed training systems that some fighters still use today. These guys like Locche were just defensive geniuses. Where do you think Mayweather learned his tactics, think he just made them up?
