Money MAYWEATHER VS. Money MARGARITO: What Year Should it had Happen...???

What it all boils down to is guys like Cotto, Margarito, and Williams are risky fights for Floyd. You simply can't deny that.
Floyd's career is now highly based on not only skill, but more of his "0". Without his "0", Floyd would be like Pootie Tang without his belt. Powerless. His aura of invincibility would be gone and thus would turn into another one of the greats (which obviously is a high accolade in itself), but he'd end up continuing to fight winning some and losing some.
I don't think Floyd's camp wants that for him, thus why we may never see one of those 3 fights regardless of what some of his fans may think.Comment

Funny ****. I strongly agree. That "0" is what keeps Floyd marketable. People will always tune in to watch him because they wanna see if anyone can take that 0 away from him. Once that 0 is gone, so will his marketablility.Last edited by deevel79; 12-24-2008, 10:08 AM.Comment

Here is a thread that i made a while back. This is why i feel Floyd should've fought Margarito back in 2006!
I have heard from countless Floyd fans that the reason Floyd fought Baldomir instead of Margarito, was because Baldomir was the Undisputed/Linear WW Champ, and had more to offer than Margarito did. Me personally, i doubt that was the "real" reason. This is why:
When Arum made Floyd the $8mil offer to fight Margarito, Floyd had yet to secure an opponent for his Nov 4th ppv date. He then went desperately scrambling for an opponent, when all along, Margarito was the only one willing to step in the ring with him. Not to mention, Margo was the #1 ranked WW at the time. Floyd went looking for fights with Shane (even though Shane had already stated that he will be taking the rest of the year off). He tried to get Oscar in the ring, but Oscar was in retirement mode at the time. He even went as low as to try to secure a fight with Cory Spinks! (Thank god that idea got shut down). Floyd ONLY choices were Margarito, or Baldomir (given Baldo beat Gatti). Floyd crossed his fingers, and prayed to the gods in hope of a Baldomir win. So my question is, if all along he had the option of fighting the #1 ranked WW for a career high payday, why wait, gamble, and risk losing out, in hopes that Baldomir beats Gatti? What would Floyd have done if Gatti won? There is no way on earth Gatti's people or HBO would've let that happen again, so what would Floyd have done? An even better question is, If Floyd's intentions were to go after Baldomir's titles/belts, why was Baldomir Floyd's last choice??? If you're after the WW champ, why do u go looking for fights with guys like Spinks and Shane? Floydboyz will argue that Floyd chose Baldomir over Margarito because Baldomir had the titles. Why wasnt Baldomir Floyd's first option then?????
But you must remember after Floyd beat Judah, if he had'nt fought Baldomir he would have got a lot of stick from fans and experts. Because Baldomir already beat Judah before he beat him, he had to beat Baldomir to show he was no1 at ww. Imagine if he choice not to fight Baldomir, you guys would be talking about how he ducked Baldomir. Simple Fact.
I want Floyd to fight Margarito, and im not making excuses for him. But i still feel had Margarito beaten Williams, the fight would have got closer. And before Floyd retired, Roger Mayweather was asked about a potential Cotto fight. He said Floyd will definetly fight Cotto, after Floyd beats De La Hoya in their sept rematch. Floyd was waiting for the $ to cash in before he accepted.
Hence, i believe if he comes out of retirement and beats Pacquiao, and Margarito beats Cotto in their rematch, this match will most definetly happen. Both fighters will be around 32/33 if they potentially fought. I can see it happening in 2010, if everything falls to plan.Comment

I see your point. Im a big Mayweather fan. But for me i always believed he wanted Baldomir because he was linear wbc champ. Him being WBC champ had a lot to do with it. He wnt fight for other belts, Judah being the exception as that fight was already secured before he lost to Baldomir.

I dont recall much fan outcry for Floyd to fight Baldomir. As a matter of fact, there was more pressure for Floyd to fight Margarito at that time, then there was for him to fight Baldomir. Everyone knew Baldomir's win over Judah was a fluke. Judah beat himself by underestimating Baldomir. All polls leading up to the Floyd/Baldomir fight had Floyd winning by wide UD, and that's exactly what happened. While i respect Baldo's determination, at the end of the day he was nothing more than a c-level boxer who happened to get lucky against Zab the idiot Judah, and a shot/end of his career Gatti.
Secondly, if Floyd main goal was to go after Baldomir's WBC belt, why did he go looking for fights with Spinks, Mosley, and Oscar prior to signing to fight Baldomir?Last edited by deevel79; 12-24-2008, 10:50 AM.Comment

There are/were PLENTY of talented fighters who didnt have much of a fan following due to thier lackluster styles. Most fans (especially casual fans)want to see an entertaining scrap. They can care less about watching a fighter do the shoulder roll. They dont want to see a fighter jab or potshot his way to a boring decision. They want to see fireworks. They want to see an actual fight! Not a game of "tag you're it"Comment
