  • It's nothing special aside from a couple of wins but neither is Roy Jones' or Mayweather's. That was my point.
yeah sure the first middleweight champion to win a heavy weight title in 100 years is nothing special

floyd being the firdst fighter to win 5 title in 5 weight classes while remaining undefeated all by the age of 30 is nothing special.

but duran going 1-5 against the best of his generation is special and worthy of top 5 atg status:trink26:

keep smoking what you are smoking.

and answer the question what is your criteria for being an atg fighter.

Good point but Whitaker should be excused since he did F up his shoulder. Pernell was 37 in that fight against Carlos correct?

pernell didn't quit he retired...and since he had never donwe it before I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

duran was notorious for quitting when the going got tough

De La Hoya won titles in 6 different weight classes. Hearns won titles in 5 different weight classes. Mayweather doing it was not the first time it had been done. He did it against a fighter Pacquiao stopped in 8 rounds but Pacquiao is somehow overrated in your opinion...

Toney repeated the feat against the same mediocre fighter not shortly after (and was stripped off that title for steroids). Ruiz was a paper champ and Roy Jones was actually the favorite to win the fight but despite that it was still a good win for Roy.

How many times has a lightweight champion went up and won welterweight, light middleweight and middleweight titles? I would like you to answer me.

Are you aware that Pernell Whitaker said he would quit in a fight if he ever got his face cut?

read very carefully I said did hoya, hearns, or leoanrd win 5 titles in 5 weight classes by the age of 30 and remain undefeated. here let me highlight the by the age of 30 and remain undefeated part for you

you can say what you want about ruiz but he was a better champion then barkley and moore combined.

once again trying to slam a middleweight for going up to heavy and winning a title is ******. but since duran didn't do that it makes the accmplsihemnt medicore in your opinion..

and I asked you does duran going 1-5 against his peers and quitting in the biggest match of his career worthy of a top 5 ranking, is it even worthy of a top ten ranking. because oscar can say the same thing I fought the best, well the question must be asked did duran beat the best fighters of his generation consistently like ray leonard, or floyd mayweather.

              anyone can get lucky

great accomplishment, can't take that away from duran and that is the only reason I have him ranked in my top 25. pernell went up four weight classes as well, but floyd surpassed them all and went through five weight classes and remained undefeated doing so.

Are you kidding? Name one other fight in which Duran quit because the going got tough, as you so aptly put it?

Barkley's wins over Thomas Hearns are better than what Ruiz ever accomplished.

Moore's wins over Kalule and Benitez are better than what Ruiz ever accomplished.

I'm not slamming Roy Jones for going to the heavyweight division for one fight but Lennox Lewis was the recognized champion. Jones had a good win over Ruiz but it was hardly an earth-shattering accomplishment. He was favoured to win the fight, and he won it.

Leonard, Hearns, Hagler and Benitez were not fighters of Duran's generation or weight class. Duran had most of his fights in the early/mid 70's as a lightweight while Benitez, Hearns, Hagler and Leonard did most of their work in the late 70's/early 80's.

Some people at the time were actually calling Duran too old and small before the first Ray Leonard fight.

Duran leaned back in his chair, reflective at last. "I'm very content," he said. "Many people did not believe I could make it, but I did. Many people believed I was too old to win, but I was not. Many said I could not beat Sugar Ray Leonard. Before the fight I asked myself, 'Why can't I beat him?'

Considering Duran beat the reigning future FW champ at FW and then skipped the weak JWW division to go straight to Leonard and beat him for the WW title, it's pretty easy to see that he could have very easily been a six weight champion.

It's also so easy to get a title these days that it's laughable to say it's an equal accomplishment compared to guys who were doing the same thing thirty years ago.
