Roach: We'll Fight Mayweather at Catchweight!!

So you mean when Pacman fought in 135 vs D. Diaz, you mean his opponent is at 135 in fight night then pacman blows to 147? Why are you compairing Floyd weight to Pacquaio? It's already obvious that Mayweather is bigger man than Manny...No, my point is right on the mark.
What's the point of a weigh-in, calling it a 140 pound bout, if the fighters aren't fighting at 140?
The point was that originally, it was probably to make it a fair fight; having two fighters of the same weight (by fight time) shows up and fights.
But, fighters started taking advantage of the rule and dehydrating themselves to make weight to fight smaller fighters....after that, everybody started to do it and it became skewed.
And the point still is with Manny and Floyd both showing up at the same weight on fight night. So what is the point of them having to drain themselves for the weigh-in if they will blow up in weight and be the same again by fight time?
I said let's skip the drain, and move on with the fight. The Contract can say the fighters can't weigh above so and so...say 147.
Manny was 147 for his 135 pound bout; Floyd was about 149 for his 147 pound bout.Comment

yes, but there was also a medical study that showed the dangers of figters that dehydrated for the weigh-in and then rehydrated for the fight. It wasn't good. Fighters don't always show up at healthy. Many fighters have said they have showed up "Flat" and it's not always because they simply over-trained during camp. Many will say they had a great camp, but for some reason, come fight time, they felt "Flat."
Doctors say this is because of the draining of fluids; especially fluids from the brain.
It causes serious health risks.
And I did make a thread a while back about it for ALL FIGHTERS and Posters.
My point with this fight was simple. No need to dehydrate if both fighters are already showing up at 147 for fight time. Simple...yes?Comment

I'm saying neither fighter was at 135. 135 is an exact weight. come fight time, fighters can be at different weights. Say a fight is at 135. One fighter comes in at 140; another at 147. What division is 140...what division is 147?
The point with Floyd and Manny was simple and you are over-doing it.
Both fighters fight at around what weight come fight night?
Manny was 147 for his 135 pound bout...according to Roach.
Floyd was around 147-149 for his 147 pound bout for Ricky.
Floyd and Manny are close in weight. So close that if they wanted, they could have a legit 147 pound fight come fight time. Just have Floyd stay at 147. They can put it in the contract if they like.
Manny is fully matured now; no longer a boy. He can't make 135 and shows up at 147. If he was smaller, he would not be showing up at 147 for his 135 pound bouts.Comment

...and fighters who experience what you just said above had no choice but to move up in weight. and thats what everyone does. until they experience that and feel weak at that weight and rehydration, they'll continue fighting at that weight because that's where they feel they're stronger AND quicker. speed kills.yes, but there was also a medical study that showed the dangers of figters that dehydrated for the weigh-in and then rehydrated for the fight. Yes, I know this. And I'm for the fighter taking risks..I guess. If he dies; he dies; it's on him; not me....and fighters who experience what you just said above had no choice but to move up in weight. and thats what everyone does. until they experience that and feel weak at that weight and rehydration, they'll continue fighting at that weight because that's where they feel they're stronger AND quicker. speed kills.
If he feels flat by fight time because he could rehydrate properly and it took to much out of him when he tried to make weight....**** him, I guess. He deserves what he gets.
But, that's why I brought up this piont with Freddie Roach. Why does he need a catch-weight for Floyd if Manny and Floyd show up by fight time at the same weight?
What Freddie wants to do is: Put it in Floyd's mind that he has to make weight at a certain weight, say 140...so he will be distracted from his game...like he said he did with Oscar.
He is also tryiing to suck the life out of Floyd to make sure he is not at his best. Fighters are at their safest/best when they don't have to drain. Manny is active so he is used to it. Floyd, being in his 30's, and being inactive, it will take more out of him. That's what Freddie is hoping for.
So, my suggestion is just to make it fair and make it at 147. Fight time weight in contract: 147. Floyd, since he has come in as high as 149, would have to lose 2 pounds...but won't have to lose say 7 pounds for the weigh-in if it were at 140.
Floyd has had to drain himself for 140 in 3+ years. Freddie knows this. By the time the fight could take place, it might be closer to 4.
When Floyd fought Hatton he stayed at 147 for two reasons: One, he was the Champion at 147. And Two, he knew there was no point in dehydrating to make 140 since both he and Ricky will still be under 150 come fight time...which is what JrWW tend to show up at by fight time. He saved himself from the health risk.
When Ricky rehydrates for his 140 pound bouts, he tends to be 149 for fight night. Floyd is that same weight.Last edited by Benny Leonard; 12-09-2008, 08:45 PM.Comment

I think that makes you poster number 3 or 4 that gets it.
Question: Would you say it is fair to put a cap on the weight-limit for fight time? Say, no more than 149?
I use 149 because that's what a lot of fighters have come in at when they fight at the 140 division. Floyd tends to come in at 149.
Or, we could just make it stay put at 147, since that is where Manny weighed in at during his 135 pound bout...and Welterweight is supposed to be 147.Last edited by Benny Leonard; 12-09-2008, 08:52 PM.Comment
