A close and good match no doubt. I've been asking myself this a lot lately and have changed my mind a couple of times both ways. But it comes down to this all of which I've seen other people say to varying degrees.

Dawson is still too easy to move back and force your own aggression or game plan on, if it's with accuracy. Johnson kept coming forwards and getting the better of him, and it was predictable most of the time. It happened a few times with Tarver as well. Calzaghe would come forwards with different angles and styles, openings until he found something that worked, something that neither Johnson or Tarver were good enough at doing.

If Dawson can look a little confused and hesitant with those guys whom are much less varied, how would he be with a confusing constantly changing guy like Joe?

So I'd see Calzaghe taking a UD after round 4. He just doesn't have the astuteness, game plans or adaptability required to out hustle Calzaghe. So it'd be a performance not overly dissimilar to that of the on that over came Kessler. Not saying it would be for sure, or easy, but I'd favour that outcome based on their ring habits.

Chad Dawson fights in spurs, Calzaghe fights for every second of every round.. that'd be the difference in this fight.

If anything, Dawson's best traits are his adaptibility and astuteness. I don't know about game plans - particularly against Johnson - so you may have a point there.

Dawson is easy to move back because...as a boxer and strong counterpuncher, that's what he prefers to do. As for Johnson being predictable, you're right except who's the last person that did something about it? Antonio Margarito is predictable as well.

forget Johnson he would give a Calzaghe a rough fight Reid,Bika, all gave Calzaghe a hard fight and both those guys are rough tough rugged type fighters like Johnson the way to beat Southpaw's is to fight them not stay on the outside and get picked apart by the jab and the right hook and that is why i believe Johnson,Bika,Reid gave Calz and Dawson a hard time they did not look to Box they looked to close the range and fire the right hand and left hooks just turn it into a fight rather than a Boxing match

Dawson is more well schooled than anyone Calzaghe has faced apart from maybe Hopkins and we all know that Hopkins was infront untill he faded due to his age on top of this Dawson is a Southpaw and he is quicker than anyone Calzaghe has ever faced and he goes to the body better than anyone Joe has ever faced and he along with Hopkins is the best counter puncher Joe has faced

Dawson would whip Calzaghe to much skill, technique, speed,

To be fair Dawsons astuteness, adaptability and even game plans all looked to have improved against Tarver and I'll watch it back as I only caught some of the stream. But I just don't see that they've improved to the level necessary to really trouble Joe.

His counter punching was good and he'd clobber Joe some good ones I'm sure. But he doesn't have one punch KO power, with Joes chin it's vastly more unlikely he'd knock Joe down like Hops did, and that was Hopkins best moment.

Dawsons defence, countering and slick ness are not in Hopkins league, he just doesn't have the shrewdness imo.

No I won't forget Johnson, he came forwards roughly as much as Joe would only no way near as well, varied, tactful. As for the rest I half got it and lost it due to the lack of comma's and full stops, sorry.

We don't all know Hops was in front until he faded due to his age. Most think Hops rightly won some of the early rounds with a counter KD, and it was more mixed then that. Calzaghe often adapts to suite around round 4, with Kessler he did this, and Hopkins. Hops was not tired around round 4/5, perhaps 7+, but even then with a rest he was fine up until round 10 really.

I don't doubt it would be close and so called prime Calzaghe 5 years ago might not adapt so well and get caught more. But a Calzaghe of now simply has too much ring intelligence, adaptability, accuracy and relentlessness for a still young Dawson whom has been made to look apprehensive a few too many times against simpler opponents.
