Boxing’s ‘gatekeepers’ play a vital role in the sport. They provide a ‘litmus test’ for up-and-coming fighters or can be a ‘tune-up’ for veteran superstars. Gatekeepers also frequently take fights on short notice to salvage big fight cards and make a good living while doing so. They are the unsung heroes of the sport. Why can't "ex-champs" be labeled "gatekeepers?" Mayorga and Forbes are surely two of today's best gatekeepers.

What up and coming fighter has Mayorga fought??? Who entered the "gate" through Mayorga? The only person you could possibly say was Spinks but he just gained more attention through Mayo. He had already held a title belt.

Forbes on the other hand with his fights against Bojado, D. Hopkins, and others is deserving of the title of "gatekeeper."
