I'm just curious to see what you guys consider a gatekeeper...IMO I think a gatekeeper is good enough to win a championship but kinda always fall short on the big stage..A gatekeeper pushes you to the limit and make you work and can boost your stock. (just my opnion on a gatekeeper)
Another thing about a gatekeeper is they usually have one skill that stands out and makes them a threat but overall they are limited fighters with a lot of holes that makes them easily beatable by world class guys.

A lot of gatekeepers keep their job cause they have one punch power and not much else.

Fair enough! Kinda remind of Zab at 147...He could put up a good fight but he always falls short and as you stated, he has the that one or two things that stands out (speed and power) Zab is a natural 140 IMO and he would give anybody at 147 a run for thier money. If you cant beat Zab...you're not an elite Welterweight.

I agree with your overall post!

I thought a gatekeeper was someone who never quite made it to the top, but that is a good measuring stick for young fighters coming up. Someone like Mayorga isn't a gatekeeper until he starts fighting prospects. Because otherwise who is he keeping from entering through the gate?

A good example would be someone like Chop Chop Corley he's a good voluntary defense - and he's a guy that's used for young prospects (like Devon Alexander earlier this year)

Andrew Golota would work too - never won the big belt - used for Mike Mollo (which ended up backfiring)

Ray Mercer's another. When he held the WBO belt it wasn't a major title like it is now - he was in gatekeeper status when he fought Wlad.

Monte Barrett is a gatekeeper for David Haye right now...still hasn't won "the big one"
