The best defensive boxer ever?

The earliest fight I saw of him was against Ralph Walton in 1945, Walton couldn't touch Pep, he was using his legs to move in and out, upper body movement to slip and duck punches and when Walton got inside on him, he'd spin out or clinch, it was very difficult to catch that man flush, even in his later years.

In boxing...There is nothing worst then MANY people saying a fighter is so and so and not being able to find videoz of that specific fighter. I'm really interested in finding out...I'll check *******s I guess

well, fact is, that's the case for a lot of greats.you can't exclude them cause no one film them.

You make a good point. Ive seen much more of Whitaker than I have of Pep. What I have seen of Pep in highlights shows some of graet the skills that he is famous for. But nothing that would make me think he had a better defense than Whitaker. But Pep was great, no doubt about it when you look at his record. But the best defense I have ever seen is Whiatker.

He can roll em, block em, move, head movement, lateral , backward,
use a check hook, springing left hook, lead right, or jab, 3 sniper leads, plus the check hook,
He is defense.

Yeah I'm a youngster so for me it is Whittaker, because he would throw punches while playing defense. Though those fighter Pep and Locche were nasty good a long with a few others of videos I have seen, I have to go with my lifetime unfortunately.

Mayweather has great D and in some ways the best ever. He gets caught with less punches then anyone in my lifetime. What makes it amazing is he has elements of defense from many ATGs. He has several elements including as someone mentioned the crossed arm style. His shoulder roll is great for popping punches up and not getting hit with anything(chin protection). Philly shell style as well as conventional cover up. His style is made for long term, none of it requires amazing speed(though he is extremely fast), he just deflects punches and covers up very well. He clinches well. Most of his defense requires little to no effort. He is also very elusive dips and ducks and gives angles exceptionally well. Nothing big lands because of his smooth transition of defenses and nasty reflexes. His D requires less movement and he is a bit smoother(less flashy).

Whittaker was far more elusive, used his upper body and amazing footwork to out maneuver you. His speed was amazing. His angles were great and he dipped and ducked like no one else. But his big plus was he was willing to fight in the pocket, he tried to win the fight convincingly and did in most cases. Mayweather goes into a shell and waits for things to calm somewhat then pop shots. Whittaker was a more complete fighter and though defense is great, ultimately he countered as well or better(I find it a great defensive move to be offensive, they can't punch if they are worried about you). He could hang in the pocket though less energy efficient and make you miss every single punch. Both had tremendous all around boxing ability.

I agree! But I think Whittaker was more complete in terms of what he did in the ring. Sweet Pea threw punches while playing defense. Mayweather would rather live and die by D.
