Speaking for myself, it would be the standard of being an outstanding fighter in your era, not just being an exciting attraction. Being in all time great fights doesn't make you an all time great fighter. Gatti's record just doesn't cut it.Comment

So was Jake LaMotta. The HOF is not about inducting only the best, but who left a real impression on the sport. Here is a post someone else made in another forum ragarding Gatti being a shoe in for the HOF.
"I'm tired of this mentality. Boxing isn't about who is the best. no sport is.
If you have said that Gatti doesn't deserve to be in the HOF, then are you really a boxing fan? Gatti took the cards he was dealt and made the absolute best with them. he wasn't born with Speed like Mayweather. He wasn't born with insane power like Pavlik. But name a fighter that has had more guts then Gatti has? on the downside of his B level career he took on the BEST fighter in the world, in Floyd. He's been badly hurt many times, and never once sat on the canvas when we knew he could get up. he took massive beatings over and over again, and never gave up. He was outclassed in every big fight he took place in. And almost all of his big wins he won on Heart alone. he was part of some of the most exciting bouts in history. And watch a recent interview with him, the sport definately left its mark on his life. can you name a fighter that has a more exciting career then Gatti? can you name 10? How many fighters are in the HOF?
If Gatti's career doesnt define what boxing is about, ive been watching a different sport.
i think he deserves to be in the HOF, not because the HOF has dumbed down its standards, but becauase gatti fits in on the highest standard."
You make a very good case here.Comment

He had 4 "Fights of the year" in a 7 year span. He left a mark on the sport without even needing to be elite. He was one of the most exciting fighters the sport has ever seen. The IBHOF is not about a list of elite fighters. It is a list of People who made an impact on the sport. Who left an impression and who excelled at their craft in a way that made the sport and fans take notice. Elite Skill is welcome but not necessary.
When you look through the hall of fame list, you see guys like Barry McGuigan, who never excelled as an elite fighter, but transcended the sport with his huge popularity in Ireland. He bridged the gap between Protestants and Catholics and was a legend in their eyes. He made a difference and made the sport more popular.
Gatti himself is one of the most popular fighters in the world from the mid 90's right up until he retired. That counts for something. It is not always about how you win the game, but how you play it.Last edited by deanrw; 08-13-2008, 01:36 AM.Comment

While I don't agree, you do make a very good case for your point. There are quite a few fighters in that hall that don't deserve to be (McGuigan, Jess Willard, etc.), and some that aren't in who are way overdue.Comment

I used to like Gatti a lot too. Still do really. I respect what he's done in his career, and like you said he's been in many exciting fights. Two being some of the best I've ever seen (Ward and Rodriguez fights). So was Jake LaMotta. The HOF is not about inducting only the best, but who left a real impression on the sport. But as I got older and learned more about the sport, I noticed that Gatti was one of the best handled fighters ever. I fell for the HBO hype. And I dont blame the folks at HBO for excepting ****ty fights to help boost Arturro's career. You know you're always going to get a show with him.
Tracy Harris Patterson is his best win. A good fighter who moved up in weight. From then on he was matched up with undersized or shot names for the rest of his career. When he stepped up he was beaten up.
I'm supposed to put him in over guys like Freitas, Casamayor, Corrales, Johnston, Marquez, and Castillo? Guys who are all on the fence and would have smoked him at 130-135.Comment

That is not the point I was trying to make. I know very well of Gatti's and Corrales limitations. My point is HBO did not create the Gatti bandwagon, they just jumped on it and they did it for very good reason. Why do so many consider the HOF for only the elite fighters? It is not. It is there for those who have contributed to the sport and made a mark. Gatti made a mark. He was one of the most exciting fighters to ever grace the sport. He was involved in some of the most exciting fights to ever grace the sport.I used to like Gatti a lot too. Still do really. I respect what he's done in his career, and like you said he's been in many exciting fights. Two being some of the best I've ever seen (Ward and Rodriguez fights).

He deserves a spot for what he contributed. He is the embodyment of one of the truest Blood and Guts fighters the boxing world has ever seen.
People need to stop associating the HOF with Elite Fighters alone. It is there to celebrate the sport, and those who made a real impact.Comment
