This isn't true, completely. Yes there was a significant fanbase for Jeff Lacy, but it wasn't like Roy. It wasn't like Floyd. It wasn't even like it is now for Gamboa. He wasn't universally looked at as an absurd talent. Sure, all three of those have their naysayers, but everyone is forced to recognize their natural gifts. I was one of those who doubted Jeff Lacy. I never saw a top level talent when I looked at him. He had no control, accuracy, and jumped in like crazy. I thought anyone with fast hands would eat him alive. I did not see him as an A level fighter, ever.
I'm not going to claim I had Calzaghe over him though. As right as I was with Lacy, I was wrong with Joe. I saw him as an aging, paper belt holder who wasn't special to begin with. What a fool I turned out to be there, eh? Even had Lacy known what he was fighting, and there is no proof to say he didn't know Calzaghe was/is great by the way, he still would have been destroyed. He just was never that good. Go back and watch all his pre-Joe title fights. All these problems were there.
It is sad to watch him fight now though. He did always have an eraser in that left hook, but it has looked like a normal good punch ever since he hurt it. It just doesn't wipe the slate clean anymore.
