Joe Calzaghe vs. Roy Jones Jr: Final Fight For Joe?
Collapse
-
In 1996 Joe stated he had a dream of fighting RJJ and beating him. It looked like Calzaghe might be gearing up for a US invasion in January 2000, when he was preparing for a fight with Brit David Starie on the Tyson/Julius Francis-topped card: “Now I want the glory – and the money,” he said.
To Calzaghe, that meant Omar Sheika!!!!!! *****!! What a *****!!Comment

Roy Jones, who weighed 173½ when he beat Eric Harding on Sept. 9, 2000, was making noise about dropping a few pounds and making a run at some super middle belts. That made sense, since he’d cleaned out the best and brightest at the 175 mark. Calzaghe seemed excited at the proposition of proving himself against the best fighter in the world, RJJ. "It's the ultimate fight for me,” Calzaghe told The Associated Press. "Roy Jones is one of the best in the world, pound-for-pound, and that's the sort of opponent you need to prove you're a great fighter.” Calzaghe also hinted that it was getting too hard for him to make 168, so maybe he would gain a few pounds to make it happen with Roy if Roy didn’t want to diet.Comment

He didnt say that in 1999 you fool. He said it after Jones had been knocked out twice in a row. No one wanted to fight Jones then.
Roy has since come back pretty well and looked good against Trinidad. Hes still one of the best at 175. And Joe has virtually admitted this is a final payday anyway.Comment

Jones wasnt keen on the fight. I dont think he was "scared" and I rarely accuse figthers of ducking. But it was the risk/reward factor.Comment

Calzaghe said he didnt wanna fight Jones after Jones had been sparked out twice on the spin. It didnt make sense for anyone to go after Jones then. In all honesty, Calzaghe is doing Jones a favour by fighting him now.Comment

I didnt say they did negotiate. But Calzaghe expressed the desire to fight Jones several times. He wanted the fight no doubt and would've been easy to negotiate with. Jones was very difficult to negotiate with at that time, he felt he should've got 60/40 against Hopkins so think of the demands he wouldve made for Calzaghe!

Everything you're saying is just your opinion. I wanted FACTS. You have none.
And yes, Jones wanted 60/40. What's wrong with that? he was the bigger draw, was considered pound for pound #1 and already had a WIN over Hopkins.
And you're right...his demands for Calzaghe would've been bigger cuz who was Calzaghe back then. Except he didn't have to make any demands because Joe C. never wanted to fight him!Comment

BTW, Jones was proposing the fight in the UK "First". Then in the US. If I must, I'll go and look up an article for ya. Must I? Joe always prefers fighting in UK. Who would'nt. Bigger paydays and larger crowds for him. It's a no brainer. Even for stuck up Joe. (BTW, I like Joe allot. Just not when it comes to fighting Jones)Comment

The only reason RJJ wanted a fight in Wales and then US was to get Joe in the ring. Plus thats two big paydays!! "I'd love to go to Wales and fight in front of 70,000 or 90,000 people," Jones said. "I'd like to propose a two-fight deal. We fight the first one over there, and if there's a reason to have a second one, we'd fight it over here." That's homework bitches!!Comment
