Look at mayweather at the weights that Pernell fought at , newbie. Floyd was considered at power puncher at 130, and he was still a very crisp puncher at 135.

At lightweight, Pea was never a guy to hurt you with his punches.

Floyd is a better puncher. Floyd has more power, son.

Don't take it to heart, Calm Down. Alot of people would agree with you. In my opinion Whitaker had a better left and Mayweather had a better right. Wouldn't you agree?? Whitaker's left straight was his best punch.

        What seemed un-calm to you?

Floyd's left hook > Whitaker's straight left. And by you comparing a southpaw's left to an orthodox fighter's left tells me all I need to know.

Hey... I heard Zab Judah had a stronger left than Floyd.

Pernell fought Uncle Rog in his 12th professional fight.

Whitaker could be hit. I know this. He was just so great at turning defense into offense and vice versa. He made fighters miss while standing right in front of them, while firing off his own punches, while in the midst of an exchange. Mayweather is a bit more tactical in his approach to defense. He often waits on his opponent to make a mistake in somewhat of a defensive mindset before letting off with his own punishing punches. He is very good at this. He just invites you to **** up.

This is why I think Whitaker would have an edge. He could afford to engage Mayweather more without paying the steep price most of Floyd's opponents have paid.

An older, heavier Pernell Whitaker fought Buddy McGirt and was able to do many of the things I have described. Specifically engaging him while avoiding punches in return. You may say, "well that was Buddy McGirt, this is Floyd Mayweather", but understand McGirt was an excellent fighter for quite awhile. At one point he was considered among the best 5 fighters in the world. Offensively he operated similarly to Mayweather, using his technical supremacy to break down his opponents, feinting and jabbing before letting off with sharp power punches. He was also good at slipping punches and countering. He obviously wasn't as great as Mayweather is, but it is the closest representation of Mayweather that Whitaker fought because they shared many similar skills. Buddy McGirt was certainly much closer to Mayweather than anyone Mayweather fought being near Whitaker...if that makes sense.

I believe Whitaker's right jab and ability to feint his opponent out of their shoes would be tough for Floyd. It would keep Floyd very defensive. Couple that with his ability to engage with punches from odd angles and his underrated body attack, I think it points to a Whitaker win. That's my take.

Whitaker's best punch was his right jab. Might be the best right jab ever.

By that same logic, has Pernell ever faced anyone with defense REMOTELY NEAR Mayweather?

Floyd is pretty good at turning defense into offense himself. See Manfredy, Corrales, the brilliant pull-counters vs NDou, the Corley fight, and the way he clocked hatton while backpedaling.

I seriously doubt Mayweather could drop his hands to his waist like Pernell did in a corner and get away not getting hit.

Isn't an orthodox fighter's left hook usually his best punch? Joe Frazier, David Tua, Oscar De La Hoya, etc.

Whitaker was able to hurt several fighters he faced at 135. He knocked out Juan Nazario with a single left hand, he hurt Poli Diaz and Greg Haugen (who was VERY tough) to the body with punches, he dropped and hurt a chinny Roger, etc. I believe 50% or more of his fights as a Lightweight ended in a knockout.

I think Mayweather was a better puncher at 130 than Whitaker was at 135 though. As both men moved up they relied on beating opponents into submission to stop them.
