I don't think we'll ever see a badass like Hagler ever again. The guy wasn't even human. He was something else

Leonard admitted afterwards that if the fight was scheduled for 15 he would have gotten knocked out.

Props to him and his team for doing what they did.

-Leonard hadn't fought in three years and was coming out of retirement.
-Leonard was a welterweight and was stepping up to 160. He really had no business messin around with a psycho like Hagler!
-Hagler hadn't lost a fight in 11 years (was 62-2 at the time!).

Leonard had the perfect game plan and executed it perfectly.
Absolutely. I had such joy watching this fight. I detested Hagler because of how he ridiculed Hearns (my fav.) before their fight and then destroying him brutally.

Later on I found a lot of respect for Hagler and his throw-back no-nonsense style in- and outside the ring. He really lived boxing so I find it very surprising that he avoided the big temptation it must have been to come back. And I'm glad he didn't. Those rare occasions when great fighters dont end up on the mat are worth cherishing.

I agree! he was just an animal in the ring! A true fighter at heart.

Wow! Did not know that but I think I agree that he might not have made it had it been a 15 rounder! Leonard knew he could beat him but only under certain circumstances maybe ie. 12 rounds, big gloves and ring like you mentioned...

          A truly amazing feat!!!

Well yeah, of course...they prepared for a 12 round fight, they fought at a faster pace, like when he would throw flurries for 30 seconds, and constantly moving. That stuff takes a lot out, you couldn't do that for 15 rounds.

Dundee later said that he became certain of a Leonard victory one day when SRL was watching a tape of Hagler's fight with Mugabe. SRL was fully focused on the film and suddenly he would burst out loud saying 'one small step forward and then a jab' or something like that.

Angelo then knew that SRL had read Hagler to perfection.

Did you see the thread I posted a few weeks back?

I bumped the thread so it's on the first page as well.

They were both talking a lot of smack. You should watch the second video in the thread that I posted when you get a minute. Hell, maybe you've seen both already... Hagler explains why he was so hostile toward Hearns.

If you haven't seen it, it's worth watching IMO.

He knew he couldn't go a hard 15 with a tough physical fighter like Hagler because of his layoff and age. Props to him and his manager for insisting it be a 12 round fight.

I heard that Leonard said he could beat Hagler when he was at ringside watching the Mugabi fight.

Some of the shots Hagler took in the Mugabi fight were brutal.
