  • Comparing Roy Jones jr to floyd Mayweather jr in terms of all around skills

people on this forum cinsdier roy jones jr as arguably the most gifted fighter of his time, and mayweather as the most gifted fighter of his time p4p, so my question to all of you is who was better skillwise overall and why?

who had better upperbody movement and foot movement?
who had better timing and accuracy?
who punched sharper and precise to the body and the head, whether in combo form or potshot form?
who fought off of the ropes better?
who had better defense overall including countering?
who was more powerful and faster overall?
who was more dominant in their prime?
who punched to the body better?
who had the better straight right hand lead and left hook and jab upstairs and downstairs?
who knovked out their opponents better and won ud better?
who was just overall more skilled?

take all of these questions into account before answering the thread please.

I don't think there is even a question that Roy Jones Jr. has, thusfar, proven to be head and shoulders above Mayweather Jr. I don't think that Floyd can even come close to the explosive talent that RJJ had. But, I'll answer all of your questions.

1 - I think it's pretty close in terms of movement -- Floyd is good at running away, but RJJ was great at positioning himself and moving around the ring as well as using his great reflexes to move out of harms way. I'd give a slight edge to Roy Jones Jr.

2 - Again, while Floyd has decent timing and accuracy...this one probably isn't even close. Just look at the compubox during their primes. Roy Jones Jr. just knew exactly when to throw, his awkward angled punches and instincts allowed him to nearly hit at will. Don't get me wrong -- Mayweather is good, but not that good. Roy Jones Jr.

3 - Sharper and more precise? I won't go into long detail on this, but RJJ was a monster to the body and head whereas, while precise, Floyd is pretty feather fisted. Roy Jones Jr.

4 - Roy Jones Jr. is amazing off the ropes. Floyd is ok.

    5
    - This is one I guess I can give to Mayweather. Roy Jones Jr. had all sorts of holes in his defence, but because he could rely on his reflexes it was ok -- Mayweather is definitely more defensively sound.

6 - No question. Roy Jones Jr. was definitely quicker and 100x more powerful overall, and this is in terms of p4p.

7 - Again, this isn't even a question. Roy Jones Jr. faced better competition and was 100x more dominant in his prime...rarely losing a round let alone having disputed fights. It's not even really comparable.

8, 9, 10 & 11 - All these ones go to Roy Jones Jr. He worked the body way better with his vicious power, his hooks were insane, his straight right hand was perfect. Mayweather probably has a better jab, but Roy Jones Jr. was definitely better to watch and had better fights. Overall Roy Jones Jr. just blows Floyd out of the water without a question.

if roy in his prime had woke up with floyd's skills he would've jumped out of the window and slit his throat on the way down!

seriously though floyd is a little bit more polished but p4p roy was more talented.

he had more power and while his defensive skills might not be as good as floyd's his movement made up for it and imho although better defensively floyd gets hit more than roy.

anyone think a middleweight version of castillo pressuring roy as good as castillo did against floyd?

thank you for your feedback, but you have got to be on something kid, i'll leave it at that for now, but trust me, you will recieve another response from me pretty soon. i will argue against many of your choices, trust me. the floyd mayweather that fought gatti, roy jones jr has never looked that great against someone like floyd did that night, and i'll give more examples of each fighter's skillsets later, but for now i thank you for your feedback, but in no way will you get away with the responses you gave me, even though it's your opinion.

What are you talking about? First of all, Gatti wasn't even that good and RJJ looked 100x better against Toney (who was much, much better than Gatti). Besides, RJJ looked great in every single fight that he was in. I'll be very interested in your response.
