JOAN GUZMAN poor champion

Here's a concept: Boxing is about more than getting one big payday. Sure, it was disheartening how Arthur stalled Guzman for a meaningless fight. Guzman had momentum going for him at 130, he could have established himself as a dominant champion there.
Why do I say that? Because Guzman ditching belts and moving up in weight doesn't do much for him when he's a general unknown without plausible marketability doesn't=Superfights.
Well, probably the rationale is that he just turned 31 and he doesn't have time to unify 130 and wait and hope for a big name to come to him. By moving to 135, he's automatically ranked #1 (source) and SHOULD be made Nate Campbell's mandatory for the WBO belt (assuming Casamayor does indeed fight Diaz as he indicated). If Guzman can beat Campbell and get a belt, it will be easy for him to get another big name, especially considering 135 is nothing but big names. I think at his age this is the right strategy. They were good quality wins, but at that moment Guzman hadn't yet separated himself from the other champions in the division. I see him as more of a Pernell Whitaker type and for Guzman to get the respect he deserves he needs to stay in one place long enough to unify.
Unless he starts sitting down and turning over some power punches on these bigger guys he isn't going to get big money fights.
Now I agree, he when he was younger what you said is exactly what he should have done. But unfortunately he didn'tLast edited by ИATAS; 05-31-2008, 01:30 AM.Comment
