I disagree, Hopkins backed out of a fight with JC way before JC was a LHW. If you are the champion which JC was in the SMW division, the challengers should come to you. I dont buy into all this mecca of boxing garbage that Americans use as an excuse not to leave their own back yard.
Top post, totally agree. Very good point with Hops, applies to RJJ, and to several other weight divisions aswell. The come to the USA, centre of boxing, to meet the big test and challenge the greats, is ludicrous. If someone has a belt, is regarded as no 1 in a division, and in either in, or 1 below/above that weight, fight em you coward. Don't dismiss them with arrogant come to me in the mecca US, then lose to them years later.
Would like to see more mandatories around at times, there's too much dodging going on, makes it so political and difficult to really tell whose best. Why a boxing forum is rife with endless debate and banter, so much of it is based on unknowns because of ducking, money and politics.
He has a good resume, Eubank was a bit past his best he was never the same after the 2nd Watson fight but was still very good. The only real disappointment is that Hopkins was clearly past it and he did not fight prime RJJ and Toney but i blame Warren for that.

Joe Calzaghe won his first SMW world title in 1997.
Roy Jones had moved up to LHW by 1996.
James Toney had moved up to LHW in 1995 and by 1997 was a Cruiserweight!
Not saying I wouldn't like to have seen these fights, but it is easy to see why they never happened.

Yeah but there was talk bout a Jones Calzaghe fight i don’t care what happened behind the scenes that one should have happened, I would like to have seen a Toney fight but he was to fat.
Given how long he's been in the sport, it's a very average resume. All he really has to boast about is being undefeated and the wins over a 43 year old Hopkins and an undefeated Kessler who may or may not get better. Roy's win over Hopkins meant very little at the time, but it was better as the years went by. I don't see any of Calzaghe's opponents aside from Kessler doing anything after fighting Joe.
