Calzaghe by UD. I think Calzaghe wins this one with his speed and his combinations. I think Calzaghe will be able to survive Pavlik's best shots throughout the fight because he does have a pretty good chin.

If they fought I'd root for Kelly, but Pavlik isn't ready for an advanced bigger fighter like Calzaghe yet. If they fight in 2008, Joe schools him.

Calzaghe UD. 8 rounds to 4.

I am a huge Kelly fan, but to beat a fighter like Calzaghe, you need experience and you can't have any rough edges to your game. If Kelly had two years more experience under his belt, then I don't know. Right now, Calzaghe takes it comfortably.

I was going to start this thread myself today, because I just got through rewatching Pavlik v Miranda and Pavlik v Taylor x 2, and I'm now much clearer about how this fight would go.

The bottom line for Kelly Pavlik is that in each of his biggest fights so far he has won through the simple expedient of being the stronger man with the better stamina. Although what he does he does well, he is not a very skilful boxer and although it has become something of a stereotype about Kelly, his game is almost completely comprised of a relentless one-two one-two attack. I am not dissing him when I say this, that one-two one-two was enough to destroy Edison Miranda, and Jermain Taylor the first time, but nontheless, basically that is Kelly's whole game.

This being so, Kelly loses to one of two boxers. 1) the boxer who he cannot hit with his one-two attack but who can hit him, or 2) the boxer who he cannot hurt but who can hurt him more. A better boxer or a stronger brawler. Of these two stereotypes, Calzaghe is closer to the first, his primary strength at this stage in his career is to work out very fast, usually after three rounds, first of all how to completely negate his opponents attack, and two how to get at his opponent without taking anything in return. He did it against Kessler, and against Hopkins he actually did it about three times, making very subtle adjustments to counter Hopkins game. It wasn't obvious, but anyone who knows boxing will tell you it was there. After a few rounds it is highly likely that Kelly Pavliks one-twos will find themselves missing the target, and at the same time Kelly will find himself on the receiving end of Joe's trademark flurries. Not much power maybe, but punches all the same.

If you add into this equation that in all probability Calzaghe is not only the better boxer, but also the more durable, and quite possibly the stronger of the two (remember Kelly is a tough, strong middleweight, but Joe has boxed at SMW for years, and is now at LHW), then I think its hard to predict anything other than a tough night for Kelly Pavlik. If he does have a chance, it lies in one thing, in his game being too much for Joe. As unlikely as it might seem, this possibility should not be ruled out, the chance is always there that the plus points in Kelly's game, his power and persistence, are genuinely as world class as the plus points in Calzaghe's have been until now. Kelly, even as the MW champion has never really faced a truly world class test, so until he does we simply don't know how good he is or isn't.

On paper, and looking at the style matchup of the fight, I predict a pretty easy victory for Joe Calzaghe, but dismissing someone like Kelly Pavlik, who has produced some amazing performances in his last few fights, would be absolutely foolish. He may lose to Joe, but so has everyone else, and if Kelly Pavlik does then it won't mean he isn't an excellent fighter.

Anyone think Kelly can win? Why? No flaming here.

lol, dunno why this one went quiet for a bit, well perhaps I do but...

I think Joe wins by about 8 rounds to 4, maybe slightly less. Calzaghe needs to keep his wits about him and get a game plan going earlier than he did with Kessler or Hopkins though. He can't afford losing R's early on and getting hurt, like he seems to have done a lot recently.

Pavlik will show up big time for this fight and surprise Joe and some others imo, showing a slightly different gameplan, using the jab more, breaking Calzaghe down if he can, and trying to catch Joe with some real body shots to neutralise his speed and movement.
