  • US Boxing Bias - Worst In The World?

I've been discussing Joe Calzaghe in another thread, and the usual accusations of UK bias were raised by US posters, I think US posters sometimes neglect to realise quite how biased they themselves are, here are my thoughts on the subject:

Americans are worse than the rest of the world when it comes to overestimating their own fighters, although I accept that this can often include boxers who box out of America too, and include Mexicans, Puerto Ricans etc.

It's not so much national pride that you have, more a belief that the entire world of boxing is basically the US and an at times amazing disregard for other fighters. Virtually every single elite fighter you have, once they pass a certain point in their careers is acclaimed as a legend, no matter how often they actually lose. Look at Hopkins, Jones, Winky, Trinidad, Toney, even Tarver! At times US fans act like these guys never lost a fight in their life,
continually saying, your guy will never beat my amazing legendary legend (even though he's lost his last two fights!)

You certainly don't extend this incredible willingness to forgive defeats to non-US and particularly European fighters. Every loss by a European proves beyond all reasonable doubt that he is a bum!

So its not UK style national pride that you have exactly, more a huge and overweaning national sense of entitlement and presumed superiority, combined with an almost wilful disregard for the achievements of boxers from any other nation.

Not trying to stir anything up, just saying!

Apart from Witter and Haye I don think there are any boxers to talk about from the UK.All the talk about UK boxers is just national pride.

Honestly I dont understand how many UK fans gave Ricky Hatton a chance against Mayweather to the extent of saying Ricky was a pound for pound best fighter.Same thing with Joe's padded record,

I wouldn't consider Winky, Toney, or Tarver to be legendary at all. Toney might be great, but not so sure about legendary. Same for Winky. And Tarver? You gotta be ****in kiddin me homey. Whoever referred to his ass as bein great? And fans that won't give credit to fighters just cuz they don't come from America are just ******.

If you dont consider Winky as a legend then dont rate Mosley,Oscar or Taylor nor Hopkins.
Tarver is a legend,he's proved himself
Toney was a great boxer, that guy could kick some ass.Eubank and Benn didnt wanna hear about him Joe didnt wanna hear about Toney. It was only when Toney got to heavyweight that Joe called him.

How can you say Toney is not a legend, his defensive techniques will be studied for generations to come.

There's the UK bias again, the one that said Lacy was going to become an all-time great, the one that said Tarver was an all-time great.

ANY fight fan from Austria to Zimbabwe HAS to know Toney is an all-time great, and that Wright is a highly rated fighter (and no one cares about Tarver)- just idiotic not to think so because those EVIL AMERICANS don't think highly of your slap boxer

I don't consider Toney a legend cuz he wasn't dominant enough for a long enough period of time. That's why I said he's great, but not necessarily a legend, although he is a guy who'll be missed and talked about when he's gone. I didn't say anything about Mosley, Oscar, and damn sure not Taylor.

I'm an American homey. I never woulda proclaimed Lacy or Tarver as an ATG. And I ain't knockin Toney at all. I'm a Lights Out fan. Maybe I shouldn't have implied that he ain't a legend at all, I just wouldn't rate his legacy as highly as Jones or Hopkins. Winky has the stuff to be an ATG but through no fault of his own, (at least for a long time) he just ain't gotten enough big fights to get legendary status.

This thread is trash. The americans have had the better fighters for a good number of years, so we have the notion that our fighters are better. Aside from Haye and calslappy there are no british fighters that make a talkible impact on boxing. so in turn our sight on U.K fighters is lower the their american counter-parts.
