Believe me, there's nothing I've said about Joe I wouldn't say to his face. The dude is a great Super Middleweight, but that's as far as it goes. Being the best Super Middleweight in the history of boxing is like being the smartest kid with Down's syndrome...it's an accomplishment, but not really.

First of all, i ain't a calzaghe hater and im not sexually obsessed with him either ...

First of all, let's get this out of the way right now: I have sent naked pictures of myself to Joe Calzaghe. It's that Welshman's chin. Very alluring.

Secondly, look at joes older fights, he was never a devastating puncher, but his technique was much better and he threw punches like a boxer should, only recently has he been throwing " slaps " .. i just want to know if people think this is because of the numerous hand injuries, or just down to the fact he cant punch for ****.

You started this stanza by establishing, for the point of comparison, that Joe used to throw quality punches, with much better technique. That right there answers at least part of the question, that he does, in fact, know how to punch. Beyond that, you could maybe make the assertion that he's forgotten how to punch, but I doubt it. His best punch in the Hopkins fight was a quick, crisp, straight left hand. Not to mention the circumstantial evidence - undefeated pro, xx number of successful title defenses, P4P ranking - stuff for which you generally have to be at least somewhat proficient in punching (the heart of boxing) to achieve.

It's been quite well known that Calzaghe had to alter his punching style to protect his hands, and it's plain to see for anyone who's seen him fight. He wears those Grant gloves to further reinforce this aspect of his game. I'm not sure how this point is really in contention. But there are a couple of points to consider: Firstly, whatever he's doing now works, at least in terms of effectiveness. He bludgeoned Lacy and clearly hurt Kessler. There's at least something behind those "slaps". Secondly, the notion presented by the thread's question is somewhat flawed. Just because one is "slapping" in an effort to protect one's hands, it doesn't mean one isn't employing poor punching technique. It need not be an "either/or" situation. "Slapping" is poor technique. It just happens to be, unfortunately, necessary in Calzaghe's case.
