    Roy Jones's competition at 175

He fought quite a few people at LHW, and beat them all, except for Tarver and (Glen) Johnson. I never thought much of this, because fighters like Woods, (Reggie) Johnson, Griffin and Gonzalez turned out to be pretty successful, but it looks like those fighters have weeded the weak out, and the two left standing are the ones who got the better of him.

Now obviously, Jones has a pretty sweet excuse about ruining his body coming down from heavyweight, but...

It also does say something about the kind of competition he fought at 175, doesn't it?

Who did he beat at 175lbs?

I cant remember anyone that good i remember him best at 168lbs.

Larry Merchant said during the first Tarver fight that he isnt fighting a local fireman now hes in with a real fighter. I take it his comp was weak at 175.

I've said before Tarver's KO in the 2nd fight just meant he had a good punch/Roy had a soft jaw, not that he was the better fighter. Roy didn't even fight in the 3rd match. First time around Tarver had his best night and Jones his worst and he still couldn't beat Roy. Johnson did whomp him fair and square with no excuses. Roy's legacy as a 175 lb champ is still a strong one regardless of what happened in the Johnson and Tarver fights.

Roy's run at 175 and Mosley's at 135 are similar. Both were deemed untouchable and all time great material. The competition was not the best or strongest when they fought but they took out the mandatories and kept on winning.

The guy I wanted to see roy fight was dariusz michaelweski of Germany, both guys were undefeated and in their primes. Even if some critics of Dariusz said he was no match for roy in terms of physical abilities and speed, he was the logical choice to challenge roy's dominion over the division. The 175 division was not very deep in the heighth of Roys reign.

That's bull****. Johnson and Tarver put a beating on him, look at what Woods, Griffith and others ended up doing. Roy's competition at 175 is weak at best.

Mike McCallum was an old, but very good fighter.
Virgil Hill defended the LHW title over 20 times at one point.
Lou Del Valle was a champion when Jones beat him.
Reggie Johnson held a belt when Jones beat him.
Julio Gonzalez won the WBO belt, being the first to beat Michaelzewski a few fights after Jones beat Gonzalez.
Clinton Woods won the IBF title after Jones beat him, and defended it a few times before Tarver took it away from him a few days ago.

Really, these guys aren't too bad. It just doesn't look good that Michaelzewski wasn't on his resume, and that the two guys who beat him have collectively beaten pretty much every good name on his resume.

Damn that is shallow but cant blame Roy if thats all there was to fight, same situation as Calzaghe at 168 great fighter stuck in a poor division.

Would of hate to see McCallum at 175lbs he was small, was an animal at 154 and 160.

The best guy in the list you posted is McCallum, but he was no longer McCcallum of the 80's & early 90's. The only guy where Roy would get credit from me would be the virgil hill fight. I believe that Hill's only loss prior to the Rib Shot from Roy was against Tommy Hearns.

On a side note, I love how people let Roy Jones and Joe Calzaghe slide on ****ty title defenses with the "weak division" excuse, yet crucify Hopkins for essentially the same thing.

(Not that anybody in this thread has done that, but I've seen it done before.)

Roy's run at 175 is A LOT better then Mosley's 135 run by a freaking long shot.

And I find Roy Jones competetion at 175 to be good. Just like Hopkins and Calzaghe's. It isn't ZOMG FREAKING GREAT!! But isn't there always a catch except for Heavyweight? It's either "they were moving up in weight" "Past their prime" etc.

                    People look way into resumes.
