By boxing. He can't stand and trade with Margarito, he needs to use his jab and pick his spots to throw punches down the middle when Margarito is throwing his wide shots. He should only get inside to throw some of his body shots and then get back out before Margarito can get back at him.

Box and turn in a higher workrate. Do a Nate Campbell on Juan Diaz and flood Margarito with more punches.

Have to agree that Margarito's punches are wide and sometimes even wild, they hit nothing but air.

Margarito will however give Cotto a tough fight. I see Cotto by UD 116-112.

I dont' think trading with him is a complete lost cause niether.

Cotto survived Ricardo Torres, and Trinidad traded bombs with Mayorga who also has an iron chin.

If Cotto wants to make it boring, he can outbox him flick the jab eat the body.

But if he wants to brawl, eating Margarito's body wont be a problem, he has a granite chin but a poor defence.

Cotto's gonna have to use his movement and his improved jab to ward off a Tony who's gonna come out firing from the opening bell but rememer its Tony's chin thats granite not his liver

juan diaz has nowhere near the power tony has plus cotto cant clinch like campbell considering margarito is bigger
i think outboxing margarito is cotto safest bet but i cant see him boxing the whole 12 rounds
hes gonna trade sooner or later

I dont see that working with a much bigger man who also throws a lot of punches. Cotto will just have to box, his jab is very strong considering he is a natural lefty, so when Margarito comes him hes going to have to pop him and make Margarito keep resetting. He should also be able to side step wide hooks and beat up Margs body. I can also see Cotto working out of the southpaw stance quite a bit and landing straight lefts to the forward pressing Margarito. There will be exchanges but he just cant let Margarito stay set because then he will get outworked.

Use his better boxing skills, use the ring, circle and box on the backfoot, and take advantage of Margarito's lack of speed.

Sort of like how Cotto fought Abdullaev, although Margarito is much better than Abdullaev.

I agree that Cotto needs to Box and move to stay in the fight. My question is; how is that going to make for an exciting match? What are we talking about here? Cotto tries to pull a Mayweather or what? Will that work for 12?

Margarito will probably be able to make Cotto brawl with him a few times in the fight because sometimes he puts so much pressure on a fighter that they have no choice but to fight back.

A boring fight would help Cotto, the more exciting the fight is, the more it favors Margarito IMO.
