Cortez was ****, but it's not like Hatton was winning the fight and then got fouled out of his rhythm. He didn't get cut open by a headbutt, he didn't get low blowed just as he was about to score a KO.

On the other hand the actions of the ref ensured that Hatton was never in the fight. We don't know what would have happened if the ref let them get on with it, whether Hatton would have succeeded in wearing down Mayweather and setting him up towards the end, nor do we know how Mayweather would have reacted if Cortez called all of his fouls as well. That's a real shame in that we really don't know how it would have turned out if the refereeing was fair. Allowing rough fighting would benefit Hatton without a doubt but Cortez only allowed rough fighting from one guy.Comment

Shame quotes and threads still devoted to that fight. Cortez is iffy though, I noticed before the fight when Hatton's people asked him things, he answered a little different than what he told Floyd's people. Also when he refs Bhop's fights, Hop gets away with murder and the other guy is usually the one getting a point taken away.Comment

I'm worried about Cortez being the referee for the Calzaghe vs. Hopkins fight. He'll let Hopkins do all his dirty stuff, then likely deduct a point or two from Joe.
He's firm with some fighters but not with others, and he's anything but fair.Comment

Has Cortez already been awarded the fight?Comment

Cortez has fallen off as a ref and been lousy for awhile.
Strange that it took so long for people to realize it.
I found it more troublesome when he stood there and almost let Paul Williams kill poor Santos Pakau, and almost let Ike Quartey end Carlos Bojorquez's life, than I did in his Mayweather-Hatton performance.Comment

Cortez is a ****house of a ref no doubt.
He missed everything from Floyd. Which is poor for an experienced ref. If he was a football ref he'd face a suspension.
Hatton got elbowed to ****.
Mayweather wins whatever though.Comment

that makes it sound like the use of elbows was offensive, when it was defensive. Hatton actually uses his elbows to set up shots in fights. Floyds use of the elbow shouldnt even be this big a talkin point......... lame lame lame.Comment
