most fighters who don't know the history of the sport don't make it to that next level. guys like jermain taylor are the exception, and he's been exposed to a degree.

A fan does not need to get in the ring to understand the history of the sport and have a understanding of the sport.
well, yes and no. somebody who has never been in a single fight, or been punched in the face, or gut can still be a fan. they can have good, well rounded knowledge of the fight game, and love the sport. that said, professional trainers, and especially professional fighters see things and understand things that other people don't. they just can't always articulate it as well.

It’s one thing for someone to say that they don’t like someone. That’s their business. But to say that Bert Sugar hasn’t done anything for the sport of boxing is being completely naïve.

Yes inside the ring they know more but that doesn't mean that so and so boxer automatically knows more about the sport he just knows what it is like to be apart of the sport.

Don't get me wrong i myself wouldn't set myself up to think that i know more about it then any of them but someone like Bert who has been around it for so long is going to know more then most young fighters today.

Think about it where do you think all of these guys got their information form they were all reading Bert's books just like the rest of us and i'm sure a lot still do.

** I believe the original question was what has he done to merit HOF induction.

It's a fair question even if the responses wander off topic. I just see him as the old guy the networks like to trot out for historical color commentary. He writes books, but really, mano a mano, pen to pen or sword to sword, cane to cane, could he even take Mike Katz?

Dunno, but Sugar will take his HOF aclaim to the bank. That much I know.

I believe that as a boxing writer Sugar deserves to be in the HOF. I just find him generally speaking to be a bit of a blowhard. But it's good work if you can get it.

If you think he's a douche bag (which I can attest that he is not, I've spoken with him on a number of ocassions and he is one of the nicest people you'd ever meet), then that's a different story. A lot of people might be challenged by his confidence and his aura, but that's no reason to hate the man.

If people don't ask for his opinion, he wouldn't give it.

Wasn't it Zab who said that he would have liked to have fought Hagler because Hagler was the greatest welterweight?
This is very true. Kassim Ouma told me that I know a lot more about the sport because it's my job to know these facts. I wouldn't say that I knew more about defense or throwing a jab because I don't.

Many fighters don't concern themselves with history lessons.
