i love bert sugar. He's been involved with the sport forever and he still gets more excited about it than most young fans.Comment

In any case he is a part of a separate category from boxers so it is in no way an insult to any fighter.
He is not taking anyone's place in the hall other then other writers.
Modern era>Ali ect
Old timers>Sam Langford ect
Pioneers>James Figg ect
Non-participants> Don King ect
Observers> Bert Sugar ectLast edited by THE REAL NINJA; 02-02-2008, 07:35 PM.Comment

i understand, but not like the posters who make these threads. There are some posters (wmute, yogi) that know more than a lot of upstart journalists. I would never put myself in the same category as a more experienced writer whose typewriter I couldn't carry. I'd like to think that being close to the action has given me a better understanding, but just because I'm a writer that doesn't make me Bert Sugar. That takes time and maturity. You can't look at a piece of information once and appreciate it. You have to look back 5 years at what you said and correct it, then you understand better.
Guys like Thomas Gerbasi, Bert Sugar, Larry Merchant, they are special.
There are a lot of posters here that know more about boxing than ESB writers.Comment

Definitely agree. I've met Bert a couple of times and he knows his stuff. He may make a mistake on occasion but hes human and it happens. He follows current boxing as well and isn't stuck in the past like these posters are saying. The hatred of Bert Sugar in this thread is bordering on blasphemy. Sugar is an icon in the sport and a guy who can talk about the early days of Ali as easily as he can Khaosai Galaxy's amateur record.
You don't have to like him, but you have to respect him. Why don't you pick up one of his close to 100 boxing books and tell me the guy isn't a library and a shrine to the golden era of when boxing was culture.

never will i claim to know more about the history of boxing than bert sugar. however, i still think he's a douche bag. he gets way more attention and acclaim than any sportswriter should. for someone who has never bled in that ring, he sure does act like he knows EVERYTHING about the sport.
same with the ring rankings- everyone seems to think they're the end all, be all rating system. i don't know man, i'm a big boy. i can decide who is better than who.Comment

The fighter does not need to know the history of the sport or even be a fan of the sport in order to be part of the sport.
A fan does not need to get in the ring to understand the history of the sport and have a understanding of the sport.
Wasn't it Zab who said that he would have liked to have fought Hagler because Hagler was the greatest welterweight?Comment
