The same people who bash Floyd for not fighting the best in the division, are the same ones that are finding ways of justifying a Cotto Gomez fight.
thought this was a great post conveying the exact issue at hand here.

Mayweather fought like 10 tune ups in a row. Cotto is coming off two tough fights. This is not the same thing and if you used a little common sense you would see that.

THis is about fighting... not a beauty pageant!?? WTF.

As for in the ring... Cotto could very well surpass DLH. TIme will speak.
        Agreed....

Wont happen. Cotto has the personality of a cabbage. Great fighter though.

No I think Oscar already knew that floyd was a level above him, but he felt like he could win.

Why else would he train like he trained. If he thought Floyd was less than him I think he would have looked more like he did aginst Sturm, don't u think

I think one thing is clear: Miguel Cotto is the #1 welterweight and deserves a shot at Floyd. His win over Shane proved that.

However, Mayweather fans do have a point that if Mayweather would fight Gomez to have a tune up with Cotto everyone would be going crazy. I also think if Mayweather beat Shane people would use the "He's old" excuse. Whoever said that people would give Cotto a lot more credit for being Oscar is sad, but probably true point.

Personally, even though Shane and Oscar were past their primes, I believe they were both really good and you can average them out as equal wins. The advantage might go to Cotto, since he proved himself more, but it could even out since Mayweather beat Oscar more desicievly then Cotto beat Shane.

Anyway, I think Cotto is the #1 contender, and hope if Mayweather fights De La Hoya again...he'll hopefully say he'll fight Cotto insted of yet again, another BS retirement. Better yet, just fight Cotto first and let Oscar fight Cotto.

Though, I don't think "Floyd is ducking Cotto to fight Oscar again!!" It's just simply greed (unforuntely), but I bet Cotto would do the exact same thing if Cotto was in Mayweather's position.

edit: Oh and I hope Margarito loses to Judah. I do not want to see a Margarito/Cotto match up at all. Though, Cotto taking a tune up right now is ok I guess. I just hope the plan backfires.

Floyd faught gatti, baldi, judah, dlh, hatton. where the **** is the tune of fight of the likes of gomez in that mix?
Floyd tune-ups; ummmm...Bruseles? no better yet Gatti yes Gatti; the one that got knockout into retirement by Cotto's tune-up fighter Alfonso Gomez

Like you I don't think Gomez belong in the same ring with Cotto. He should be fighting Floyd or DLH but neither of them dare to fight him instead the rather dance once again with each other in a safe fight for 12 boring-ass rounds. With does two out of the picture I do think he should fight Margarito, Cintron or PW next

cotto doesn't need to be the next golden boy, he has his own personality, different minds/world....cotto needs to be cotto, a very interesting career in the ring, a very boring lifestyle

Well and why we have to judge maywether in his recents fights only when maywether is the one with a longer carrer. Cotto has half of floyd time in the sport and the two has the right to take a tune up fight even floyd at this moment.
