“hatton Is A Tough Opponent” – Mayweather
By Maloney L. Samaco, PhilBoxing.com, Mon, 10 Dec 2007
The battle of undefeated champions resulted in a knockout win by Floyd Mayweather, Jr. over Ricky Hatton. But Mayweather declared that Hatton proved to be a tough opponent. The smoke has cleared and yes mayweather won.
it was one of his most impressive displays of skill/talent that i've seen from him in quite a few years.
for once im pleased with his performance due to the fact he didnt just use defensive minded tactics...he also got in there and at times fought hatton's fight.
All the credit to Mayweather for a great performance and showing he can be a good guy by giving hatton so much praise and being humble when the fight was over.
i'd like to see more of that type of mayweather in and out of the ring.
hatton didnt display his best performance but he sure did fight his heart out and although i would bet mayweather to win, i was hoping hatton could pull out a victory...
he showed a lot of heart and courage and no matter how many times he got caught with good punches he kept coming forward and you have to appreciate that if you're a true boxing fan.
i do however think the judges scorecards were a little off...i had mayweather ahead 3 points (2 rounds and 1 point for the foul) going into the 10th round.
i dont think hatton only won one round up until the 10th.
i think that was a little bit of an exaggeration but i also wasnt at ringside so i seen a different fight than those in the arena.
either way im not taking anything away from mayweather i clearly had him winning the fight and knew hatton would need a couple of knockdowns or a knockout to win.
it was a good fight on both sides even if statistically it didnt appear like it...and even with all the downtime from the holding (on both fighter's part).
cant wait to see these two get in the ring again (just not against each other...dont think ricky would have a better chance at all a second time around).
if we're lucky we will see de la hoya vs. hatton and floyd vs. cotto or another worthy opponent.
by the way (for the record) whoever was whinning about cortez stopping it early take note that it was going to get stopped anyway...hatton's corner were calling it off win he went down (the ref didnt see it...he just stopped it)
so it wouldnt have mattered but i know hatton has a ton of heart and given the chance he would have kept fighting until he was knocked out. he's a good guy.
