As far as i know its illegal to hit and hold so you cant moan about that a ref like mills lane would have disqulified hatton if he did that the whole fight.
I found the sky commentators annoying they kept going on about it the whole fight even when hatton was holding and hitting they still moaned about the ref.
But Mayweather did it loads in the later rounds and Cortez let him.

no consistency and Hatton was on top too

Because he couldn't get it done in the first four he couldn't get it done in the last four.
      agreed, he was stitched up

its a pity he was knocked out because he'd have had a genuine case for a rematch based on a biased ref.

      • Just watched the fight again... Joe Cortez' performance was even more disgraceful.

I didn't notice it as much watching the fight live, but Mayweather was seriously flaunting his immunity to punishment. He was just sitting there elbowing, pushing his forearm into Rickys face, and generally fouling his balls off.

All of this WHILE Joe Cortez is breaking them. Not only was Mayweather consistently hitting on the break, he was fouling on the break, nearly without fail.

Joe Cortez should be ashamed of himself. My father was screaming that the fight was fixed. I didn't give it any consideration.

However, watching it again, the complete and utterly biased Reffing forces me to reconsider that opinion.

I would not be shocked of Joe Cortez was paid off.

I would actually be much more surprised to learn that he wasn't.

It is really hard to fathom that a ref with as much experience as Joe Cortez could unintentionally mangle a fight so horribly.

          Sig worthy.

mayweather didint look the slightest bit in trouble or hurt, against corley when he got caught, he covered up and he looked visibly stunned, in this fight mayweather lost his balanace, recovered, threw a left hand, moved and continued, anyone who thinks mayweather was "in trouble" is dillusional.

and no, cortez never stepped in at all during that sequence.

Floyd had more energy to burn, quicker feet under him, fast hands, and more power because of what Joe Cortez did in the early rounds. He prevent Ricky Hatton from draining his tank with a consistent body attack.
Exactly. My buddy and I have been arguing and bitching about this situation all morning. If he allowed Hatton to get in and do his work, who knows if Mayweather could have gotten those flurries off like he did, though I do still believe that first left hook the dropped him was entirely possible regardless of what kind of punishment Hatton dished out.

Absolutely and it sucks because of that.

I think he was totally paid off. I can't really comment on the fouling and cheap **** Mayweather was doing because Hatton's constant clinching in the past has been permitted and I find that to be weak, but I was glad to see he did none of that last night. That speaks volumes to me. As far as I'm concerned, its the refs job to stop nonsense from happening like the elbows. Fighters will keep doing it if they are allowed to get away with it. Most people would too.

                  • Lol at the people complaining about Ricky Hatton's opponnet being the one dirty. People forget that he's more dirty then any of them. It's ok for him to do it, but not Mayweather?

I think Cortez shouldn't have been in the action as much as he was, but he still did a somewhat good job on warning both sides.
