You don't have to use one specific term to be construed as racist. Hopkins' comments, regardless of his motivation, were race based. It was rather cheap and a little sad, but it was racism. I'd be disappointed if our black brethren dismissed this as "OK" because it was directed at whites because such an attitude only serves to perpetuate racism in all its forms.
But I don't think it offended me personally, regardless of its intention.
Besides which, calling Calzaghe "white boy" wasted a perfect opportunity to use the term "Sheep-shagging Welsh git".
