hype machine during the olympics, oscar was the guy, i can recall a special moment in my younger years watching the olympics with my mother in 92 and watching oscar win it all, i was only 9 at the time, but i knew oscar would probably be something, or at least i hoped i would, winning a gold medal to me was huge because it meant you were the best non pro in the world, to this day the olympics and boxing in general mean alot to me because of oscar, his mom died, and i was without my dad who wouldnt talk to me at the time, so i really related to what had happened to him.

Regardless, Oscar is a star because he lived up to his hype, he always came to fight and had knockout power, he beat guys he was supposed to beat, and delivered even in his losses (except sturm)

Jones was never bigger than DeLaHoya, or at least where I grew up.

he has good skill. and a fun style. boxer puncher.

He took any fight and was moved faster then many prospects are being moved now.
His handlers also did a good job with his marketing
I'll add that when ever he fought (at least when he first started out and many years later) he was a seek and destroy type of fighter. He hunted you down then that split second you were hurt he'd jump on you and throw all his punchs full force including the kitchen sink, meaning he'd go for the ko at any sight of you being hurt.

Also you can't deny the fact the his heritage also got him the cross over appeal too.

i just watched the knockout week documentary about him last week. they kept saying something about how good looking he was and that he didn't look like a boxer.

He had sucess in a succesful olympics, had the look that made him marketable to a larger fanbase, has the necessary skills and had some big, exciting and controversial fights.

he was the face of boxing long before jones was KO'ed, Jones was my dude, but alot of people didint like his brashness and arrogance, and unfortunately later in his career, he really began to dominate guys to the point where people questioned his competition.

True, like it had been said before, Mexico adopted him as one of their own, and he already had all of the states due to his gold medal and story. His spanish speaking and english allowed him to have no limits. Even today, we can see Miguel Cotto trying to capitalize on that move.
