Had an awesome story going into the olympics and came out with the gold medal. He was a star before he even turned pro and then he legitimized his stardom by knocking everybody out, and becoming world champ. Then he proceded to become champ in divisions from 130-160, what more do you want?

but in terms of the best boxers of this era, i dont have him in the top 4, he has a lot of Losses and it is obvious to me that it is not based on boxing skills alone.

he had the looks to bring in female and gay fans.
he has good skill. and a fun style. boxer puncher.

He took any fight and was moved faster then many prospects are being moved now.
His handlers also did a good job with his marketing

Chavez, Gatti, Whitaker, (Should have beaten Mosley once and Trinidad) Vargas. And a very solid AM career. He's a 6 division champion. H'es not a bad candidate for a guy to get this kind of recognition.

Anyway, he's gotten it by having a gold medal. First, then he went on to deliver in his first 30 or so fights. He got KD but would get up and win, usually by KO/TKO. Bringing in the element of excitement to his fight. He was NEVER a perfect fighter, which some likes, but he was ALWAYS willing to fight the best. Which purists like. He's a decent looking guy, so girls/woman like him, plus he could smile one minute and try and kill someone the next. Also a plus for fans, and girls to an extent. He had/has a killer instinct if he has you hurt, a great left hook and would look for it if needed. American, who can speak Spanish perfectly, essentially, so he touches on both fanbases, to a certain degree.

So you get, Mexicans, Americans, females, AM career, purists, casual (who just like the big fights), and fans who TRULY just like his style. Gold medal, all the titles.. It's just a great combination.

I think he really became the face of boxing after Jones got ko'd.

And it mainly attributed to good marketing strategies like appealing to women and stuff like that. Men usually don't care for **** like "face of boxing"

youre gonna have a lot of losses if you only fight the best every time you go out. I mean hes lost to Shane, Bernard, Tito (not really) and Floyd, hes been in there with the best and doesnt back down from anybody. Dudes respect his fight game, girls like his looks, and the rest of America was sold on him and his story about his mom.
