Calzaghe/Kessler does lowest ratings ever for HBO

It wouldn't, Shane. Trust me.It really wouldn't?
65,000 fans with tickets ranging from $100 to $1800, us Brits love a drink so you can guarantee hundreds of thousands of pounds (millions of dollars) is going to be made from that, food and water is a necessity which will also bring in ALOT of cash with a crowd that huge, the list goes on and on.
So from that ONE night of boxing alone, you're looking at ATLEAST 10 million pounds of profit, and even after everybody has taken their cut, what's being thrown in the kitty will definitely boost up the fighter's purse, mainly Calzaghe's ****ty 2 million dollar offer which would possibly double if the fight happens to take place here.
So yeah, it really would.Comment

I'm not sure how the rating system works for a cable subscription service like HBO, but if it's the same as regular TV, I think doing a 2.8 is a pretty solid number when you consider the fight was between two European fighters in a non-traditional weight class.Comment

It doesn't shock me that it did so poorly. This fight was the hardcore fan's dream, not a casual's. For Calzaghe, even the casual Brit takes interest. So he is a HUGE draw in the UK. Hopkins though loses to Joe wherever its held. I prefer it be in the states so I can go, but that is my biased opinion. Trully if Kessler was an American, he would be a HUGE draw. Hopkins does better numbers but isn't an overly big draw himself here. And his last outing was a boring affair. Hopkins had a good fight with Tarver, but I fell asleep during the replays of 3 of his last 4 fights. Honestly, I have yet to finish either Hopkins/Taylor fight. I like Bernard, his business savvy is remarkable, true credit to GoldenBoy. But he was never an exciting fighter and never trully a really big draw. He was more or less his generations Pernell Whitaker in that sense.Comment

Well, they didn't "lose money" per se, because it is a subscription-based service. They don't rely on commercials for their revenues. NBC, for example, changes for their airtime based on the ratings in that time slot. HBO doesn't air commercials.
But they need to have "destination TV" to incent people to subscribe. Movies, series and specials that make people want to order HBO.
There's about 110 million US TV households. Only a third of them have HBO.
But I understand your point... they def overspent on that Greasy Limey.Comment

No, but they can sell PPVs and Joe cannot. You make more money off PPVs than you do in live gates because you can sell to so many more people. You can only fit so many people in a stadium but PPV sales are only limited by the number of televisions out there.Comment

8 World Champions, 3 Undisputed Champions yea real garbage there.
Joe Calzaghe has been on prime time terrestial tv, has Mayweather or Hopkins? why pay PPV when giant TV companies like ITV who draw millions of viewers host the fight for free, heck Danny Williams got 8 Million viewers for one of his fights. Hopkins is a *****, he flat at ducked Joe 5 years ago, when everything was inplace and he demanded double at the last minute. If Hopkins is such a draw why 9,000 at his last fight? PPV yes were ok so why not have the fight in Wales infront of 60,000 at 2am for American PPV sales and get the best of both worlds, but you won't because Hopkins is a *****. People seem to forget the fanbase that will watch on UK television, would most likely be on Setanta now that would be paying to watch the fight, it's not just the Americans who bring in the cash. Calzaghe should get as much as he did vs Kessler any less is a meaningless offer.Millions of people have paid to watch Mayweather and Hopkins, have millions paid to watch Joe on PPV?
thought not.Comment
