Ellerbe: "Fans Coming For Floyd, Not Ricky"

Leonard Ellerbe, adviser of WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., told UK media outlet The Mirror, that fans are coming to MGM Grand on Dec. 8 to see Mayweather, and not challenger Ricky Hatton. Ellerbe is tired of people saying that Hatton is the draw, and was irked by comments made by the Hatton camp, which stated that Mayweather would have 33 supporters to Hatton's 33,000. Ellerbe says that Hatton is only a popular fighter in the UK. [details]

ricky has 20,000 fans going across the atlantic ocean, spending anything from £500 pounds up to several thousand to watch him 3 weeks before christmas. no other fighter on the planet would get that kind of support with the exception of perhaps oscar

Real talk De la Hoya wouldn't get that type of support either. Two different countries two different types of fans and support.

Hatton is fighting the best p4p fighter in the world, that's why so many of his fans are traveling. If Roman Karmazin was the p4p #1 and he were fighting Ricky, they'd still come to Vegas in their droves to see him fight. It's Floyd's #1 status that is selling this fight, not his personality or in-ring style.

If you replace mayweather with Cotto, the overwhelming majority of those fans will still make the trip. If you replace Hatton with Cotto just about none of those fans make the trip, although other fans would buy the tickets. My point is they are coming to see hatton, the factthat he fights floyd plays a part, but doesn't change the ultimate fact, Ellerbe is a dumb ass.

Bwaaaa haaa haa. Is Ellerbe serious? If thats the case, then why didnt 20-30k British fans flock to Vegas when Floyd fought Oscar? This guy is something else. Yes they are coming to see such a great matchup, but i HIGHLY doubt that they are coming just to see Floyd.

i see your point but if it was calzaghe fighting floyd then he would have nowhere near that kind of support. hatton is followed everywhere by thousands of british fans, and he has consistently sold the MEN arena out for the best part of 8 years. he is supported as such because of his exciting style and fantastic personality. of course floyd being p4p 1 number is a factor but the fans are travelling to see ricky fight not floyd

Leonard Ellerbe needs to start coming to terms with the fact that Floyd Joy Sinclair is about as popular as Aids in Africa.

Floyd's status is definitely selling the fight. The last few ppvs Floyd was in all went over 300,000 and we know what the last one did. Ricky's never even had a ppv and nobody in the states knows him. Floyd is definitely the draw. 20,000 fans is chump change compared to 2 million pay per views.
