nice to see a rare case where a guy doesn't end up like a louis, ali, holmes, leonard, robinson, duran, chavez, tyson, holyfield, etc....where a guy leaves when he's on top and not a pathetic shell of his former self.

Wait, now he's leaving when he's on top? Make up your mind. I agree though about it being sad to see fighters like Ali losing to Holmes, or Louis losing to Marciano and pretty much every fighter you just listed. I guess when boxing is your whole life, it's hard to walk away.

Lewis looked and fought fine in the Vitali fight despite losing most of the rounds. He was in good enough shape to take flush shots from one of the heaviest hitters around and got out of dangerous moments with strong poise and technical smarts like holding and smothering to survive Vitali's onslaughts and protect himself. You want terrible Lewis, watch the first Rahman fight. If he was doing some of the ****** things he did in that fight against Vitali, he would have been out in the first round: see backing away from power shots with his arms down and other ******ity.

People are incorrect in thinking that Lewis peaked against Tyson. Tyson was so shot by then we just didnt know how much untill he lost to Danny Williams and Kevin Mcbride. Lewis was just around in a bad era of heavyweights.

he would of struggled to last 3 rounds with the 80s Tyson.

Unlikely as he was KOed twice, and avenged both in rematches.

don't get me wrong I ain't calling him a quitter in any way I just reference the heart shown, I for one was one of the ONLY guys who gave Popo credit for knowing when his time was done, for not waiting until he got hit like Leavander did to go down, knowing that he already lost the fight inside of himself and quit.. in Vitali's case he was winning the fight he just knew it was time to stop, I RESPECT someone who does that because it takes a real man to know he can't continue anymore, only a knucklehead would continue to fight when he knows he can't and I don't respect knuckleheads, there's a thin line between heart and ******ity..

my point was he showed good judgement in the Byrd fight because he was hurt and he didn't want to risk a deeper injury, cool, but when he fought Lewis didn't give a **** about possibly being blind after that fight, he knew the severity of the wound, it was a surprise to me they let it go THAT far, after that particular effort he was made out to seem like some outrageous force who don't feel **** for a while, when thinking about it it seems contradictory because the better judgement he showed against Byrd he lacked against Lewis, he could have been undefeated going into the Lewis fight.. I have seen fighters keep fighting using 1 hand the whole fight, for some fighters thats their style just look at Larry Holmes, he was ahead enough on points to lose every round after that and still win the fight he just opted to stop even though his 0 was on the line and like I elaborated above I commend him for that BUT the Lewis incident is contradictory to that, thats all I'm saying here.. 100

Than why did Lewis go from talks of a busy schedule that included a huge match with Roy Jones among other things to sudden retirement? Like most, I believe Lewis was confident he could not win the rematch and stepped down. It is difficult to judge a man and the decisions that are his to make, but as a fan of the sport I can't see why anyone would not feel cheated.

Any version of Tyson would have lost to Lewis. He was Tyson's worst nightmare, a big mobile fighter with a good jab, a powerful right and a decent uppercut. He was also impossible to intimidate and that was a big part of Tyson's game.

he retired on top, as the heavyweight champion of the world.

lewis looked bad and was not in good shape. it just shows u either how good lewis was or how overrated brittley was that he couldn't beat a lewis who was not in good shape, when rahman was able to beat lewis when lewis was underprepared.
