Because he separated his shoulder and couldn't lift his arm. He was WAAAAAAAY ahead on points, I guess he should have just ran the rest of the fight. Funny to have a quitschko label after one fight.

douglas dominated tyson, became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, pulled off the greatest upset in boxing history, and will always be remembered for such a great achievement.

quitali lost to a 38 year old who wasn't in good shape and hadn't fought in a year.

      sorry. bad analogy.
"Dominated Tyson?" Douglas was knocked out in that fight, watch the fight again he was down more than 10 seconds. And anyone knows Lewis reached his prime in his mid 30's.

that was the only round tyson won in the whole fight.

and the "10 second" thing....so meyran counted slow. looking at douglas, it didn't appear that he could not have gotten up if meyran counted faster. douglas was frustrated and mad at himself, but not "where am i?" type hurt.

lewis was prime from 96-00. he was in the worst shape of his career against quitali and still won.

Sent him right into retirement rather than give Vitali a rematch though didn't it?

            good for gay lewis.

most fighters fight on too long until they suck.

nice to see a rare case where a guy doesn't end up like a louis, ali, holmes, leonard, robinson, duran, chavez, tyson, holyfield, etc....where a guy leaves when he's on top and not a pathetic shell of his former self.

Lewis looked bad that night because: a) Vitali is a tall strong fighter who it's very hard to look good against and b) He got old. People can say he was out of shape (and he wasn't in the best shape of his life), but frankly, when you get old, your legs go, your balance goes, and your reflexes go, and that's exactly what happened to Lewis.

Some people think he was chicken for not giving Vitali a rematch - smart is more like it. If you know you're on the downside, and you've already accomplished everything you wanted to, why would you fight again? Who knows - maybe he could beat Vitali again, maybe not, but it's far from a sure thing when you're on the decline...

I watched that fight last night for the first time. I had it on the computer and never got to view it. I think I was moving when this fight took place. Anyway, I'm a Lewis fan and never liked any of the klitchko's, but Lewis was tired, rusty and was getting his ass beat. I can't say who would've knocked whom out in the later rounds, but Klitch was putting it on Lewis's ass until they stopped the fight. The crowd reaction told me all I needed to know about popular consensus. Lewis looked glad to have that **** stopped. He literally would fall into his stool between rounds. Lewis was a lucky mofu that night.

It was the first time that he faced a skilled, taller than he was, fighter. So, he had to adapt. He did in the rounds closer to the middle of the fight, and the fight was stopped, in a correct fashion. Safety first, it should be in boxing.

The fight was competetive until the stoppage. Klitschko was doing extremely well against Lewis. In fact he rocked lewis in that fight. Perhaps this is the reason Lewis wasn't so adamant about a rematch.
