    Pernell was gooder than good...

Pernell's fights are the types of films to watch if you want to learn defensive mastery in boxing. Period.

Actually, after many years of practice in just about any sport, the mind tends to record and remember all of the events so that it automatically makes the body react to the same situations over and over and allowing for minimal adjustments to reach its objective.

Which is why pro athletes are pro athletes.

Ever try to hit a 100 mph fastball when you're just a beginner in baseball?

Just about anyone can do it with enough practice and time.

There was a story on Magic Johnson I read that he was able to slow down his field of vision in games and was able to see the positions of his team mates which would allow him to make incredible passes at full speed.

    It's a science thing.

I had the pleasure of watching him from the Olympics onwards and was always in awe of his skills. I may be a little biased because he's my favourite fighter but I stand by everything I say and genuinely believe it.

The best way to describe Pernell to someone who hasn't seen him is, think of Zab Judah when he was still fighting scrubs. Great movement and a great techinician.

            I hate that comparison...

Judah is a long way behind Whitaker. I see your point though but you have to add that Whitaker made world class boxers look like scrubs.

Pernell Whitaker is on the shortlist (very short list) of the greatest fighters of the modern era.

He would shut Ricky Hatton out.

I agree. The whole Pernell comparison got linked when Zab was coming up and Max Kellerman called him "Pernell with Power".

Pea would have never gotten hit with that right hand from Tszyu. And if he did, his chin would have gobled it up.

Some people think Pernell was more fun to watch than PBF because Pea did his defensive moves in the pocket while PBF circles and goes in/out more. PBF has more pop, and is taller with the longer reach. Pernell's defense and countering are a wondrous thing.

Pernell, despite being a small man, still had a good jab.

Until Trinidad, when Pea was all cracked-out, he didn't suffer a clear loss.

He is a great, great fighter.

You probally would call him the most boring guy you ever saw. When he was fighting there were a ton of people who hated to watch him and thought he was the most boring guy in the game. Now people act like they all love him. 20 years from now they will probally be doing the same thing about Floyd
I WAS GOING TO KEEP IT REAL TOO! I think this always happens after a fighter retires.

He was borring most of the time at least when i started watching boxing 92. And in the fight where he was exciting in he lost, TWICE to Rivera! And his fight with Hurta was good too but he was losely.

But whtitker was a great fighter and i think he'd beat of fair with Mayweather cause you better bet that Whitiker would wait all day to counter on Mayweather.
