Agreed. In judging achievements, you couldn't make the case for Lewis eclipsing Louis, but in a fantasy fight, Lewis and the other 240lb+ HW's of the last 15 years would have too much about them to lose to Louis, Marciano, Dempsey et al. of course, weight don't mean much in a 'fantasy' fight but you get my drift.

The reason why so many of us here on boxingscene.com do not label Floyd Mayweather Jr. as an all time great is because most of us have been watching this sport for more than 2-3 years. All time great is an elite position that only a small percentage of fighters have ever achieved. Getting established as an all time great means that you've made a permanent mark on the sport, and that without your presence the sport would not be what it is today.
There's only one way to become an all time great, and that's to constantly fight the best opponets possible. Pick any all time great off any list and I guarantee you they not only fought the best in their era, but they have victories over other established greats. I also guarantee you that if you removed them from the history of the sport, the sport would not be the same afterward.
I don't think anybody who's been watching this sport for over 3 years (or over the age of 18) could make a compelling argument as to why mayweather is an all time great. He is the greatest of his era, that much is for sure and nobody can take that away from him. But who has he beaten who is a shoe-in to the list of the greatest fighters ever to lace up the boots?
De La Hoya? He lost in every big match he ever had and was a far more sucessful businessman than boxer. Castillo, or Corrales? While both men are tough as nails and have my utmost respect, nobody could logically argue that either of them were some of the best to ever do it. Gatti? The man was always a C level bar brawler with little in the way on actual boxing talent and he won't even make the hall of fame, same goes for Carlos Baldomir. Zab Judah? Exciting prospect that never had the mental toughness to fully commit himself to an opponet who didn't "spark" him.
Do I need to pull out Hernandez, Mitchell, Corley, etc...? Bottom line is this, Mayweather is the greatest of his era and that much will always be his. But unless he beats Hatton, Cotto, Mosley and Williams there's no way to make an argument for him being an all time great. The only way for him to be an all time great is to wipe out his the entire division of all logical competition. Because none of his opponets were ever on anybody's list to be an all time great, because none of them (aside from De La Hoya's win over a deflated and old Chavez) ever beat another all time great.
Accept it for what it is: the truth. Stop calling us "haters" and whatever other lame **** you like to throw around, we're veterans of the sport and we call it like it is. I'm sorry if this is unacceptable to you but in time you'll forget all about it.
EXCELLENT POST!!!!!!!!! I completely agree with you about him being acnowledged byfighting Cotto,Mosley, and Williams. He would not get as much credit fighting Mosley. Not to discredit Shane but Shane is in his mid 30's and is not nearly what he used to be. I think had he fought Shane in his prime,Mosley would have taken him hands down.Comment

The only fighter that ever gave Shane trouble were longer lankier fighters that were bigger than he was ala Vernon Forest and Winky. He would have taken Floyd.Comment

I disagree. In his prime Shane Mosley was always a better fighter than Oscar De La Hoya, and a much better match for Mayweather stylistically. Even now with his age I would give Shane a good chance at beating Mayweather based on the fact that he has solid power in both hands, and his speed and boxing/countering ability hasn't diminished much, if at all.EXCELLENT POST!!!!!!!!! Mayweather needs to stop trying to belittle Mosley by calling him a "sparring" partner. Mosley wanted Mayweather 3 years ago but Mayweather wouldn't fight him, then mayweather wanted Mosley last year and Mosley didn't want Mayweather in return. They need to stop their childish quarrel and settle it in the ring, because while Mayweather is #1 p4p, Mosley is still in the top 5 and has a much better record than Oscar did.Comment

Your right!!! It's kind of funny to me that Mayweather has been calling Shane a sparring partner for so long and now he says that if he beats Cotto, he would be interested in fighting him. I think Shane would still havea good shot, but it seems to me that Floyd is hoping Mosley wins, so he can fight the older Mosley. I don't think he is as anxious to fight a youg in his prime Cotto. He mentioned fighting Shane if he beats Cotto, but didn't say anything about fighting Cotto if he beats Shane. It wasn't that Shane didn't want to fight Mayweather last year, he was coming back down to welter after being at 154 for the past few years and just said that he wanted to readjust to the weight by taking a couple of fights before fighting him. You can't blame him for that, and it doesn't mean he was avoiding him, he was being smart. I can imagine it is harder dropping back down when your an older fighter.I disagree. Floyd is a smart fighter, he knows that if Mosley wins against Cotto, he will be worn down severely because Cotto is relentless. I think Mayweather wants Mosley to take a beating from Cotto but ultimately win, so he can try to pick his bones. Cotto's body assault will certainly slow Shane down a bit, and if he's slower than Mayweather then Mayweather will win.Your right!!! Shane had a legit excuse in my eyes for not wanting to fight Mayweather after coming down in weight and needing to readjust. Someone Shane's age doesn't want to come down in weight and make his first fight there against the best damn fighter in the world. It's hard to adjust to weight at that age, the only boxer I know who's capable of doing that these days would be Bernard Hopkins.Comment

You are making that up.
Three years ago, Shane had been at 154 (on steroids, btw). Meanwhile Floyd had JUST moved up to 140.Comment
