i agree, i aslo think he would have a better than average chance at beating spinks. People forget very fast how talented Roy was, and since the tarver loss when he came down from heavyweight (after getting a title at heavy). Had he retired after the ruiz fight this question wouldn't even be up for a debate.
How would Prime Roy Jones do in the 1980's?

I'd say Juanita (and quite a few other people) would disagree, especially when Ray would get coked up, drunk, and then pretend she was Davey Boy Green.I'd love to have seen him in his prime against Leonard, Hearns, Hagler, and Spinks. They would all be great fights but with each a triology would be needed because anyone could win at any one time so a 2 out of 3 would be nice. I like your title name. I always liked Leonard he was great and a great man outside the ring.Comment

Unlike you, we just know what we are talking about.LOL!! U seriously think RJJ would stand a chance against Hearns and Hagler. You people are idiots. Hearns has one of the best footwork in boxing and with his speed reach and power added to that RJJ would get KTFO. How would RJJ be able to get close to Hearns??? AND Hagler is just way to strong for RJJ and one swing for Hagler would put Glass Jaw Jones down. Like I said b4 he stands a better chance against SRL. I mean be real people stop defending the man you like.
Jones has footwork, speed and power in volumes, moreso than Hearns.
On top of that he was used to fight bigger fighters at 175, so getting in range is not a problem for Jones.
Jones has better stamina, way better stamina than Hearns.
Hearns was knocked out even in his prime at 147 and 160. Jones was knocked out at the tender age of 35 at 175.
Hearns wasnt KOing anyone of sorts at 68-75. Jones did and also took out middleweights with one punch.
You do the math on who goes down..
Hagler was NOT a one punch KO artist, he never was. His knocking out the bigger Jones with "one swing" is beyond logic.
get a clue before posting meaningless crap.Comment

Leonard got on the inside of Hearns, imagine with Jones being bigger and stronger.Your saying he'll beat Hagler and Hearns?? What kind of idiot are you?? I know you must be a fan but GET REAL. On some real **** Hearns wouldn't allow RJJ to get close and even if RJJ got close he'd lose the in-fight. Hearns has way more power then Jones. Explain to me how does RJJ beat Hagler or Hearns!! and Dont give me that BULL****
Jones has way more power than Hearns. Hearns had mad power at 47-54-60 Jones did hte same to fighters at 60-68-75.
Again, get your facts straight before posting bull****.Comment

Jones lost to Tarver at age 35. What were Leonard, Hearns, Hagler doing at 35? do I need to tell you?I seriously don't think anyone here is being honest. There is no reason for me to respond to any of this. Your telling me RJJ can deal with Hagler and hearns who are far better fighters then Tarvar. Hagler would dog him down. No way is RJJ gonna make it alive against Hagler. Thomas Hearns has the power reach height footwork to beat RJJ on points.

Finally getting to the details of the fights.
Jones beats Leonard and Hearns 10 times out of 10
Jones loses to Spinks 9 times out of 10
Jones and Hagler is really tough to call, and I think the counterpuncher Hagler needs to show up. If its 84-87 Hagler Jones takes it. too much movement, too much speed. too much orthodoxy.
Nunn gives Jones a great fight with his style, but ultimately i would have Jones winning most of the times (7-8 out of 10), due to Nunn being inconsistent in focus and strategy.Comment

The perfect time for Roy to have retired would have been after Tarver 1.i agree, i aslo think he would have a better than average chance at beating spinks. People forget very fast how talented Roy was, and since the tarver loss when he came down from heavyweight (after getting a title at heavy). Had he retired after the ruiz fight this question wouldn't even be up for a debate.
He was - maybe - behind going into the championship rounds, and he dug it out. Closed strong in that fight.
Coming from the heavyweight belt and beating - at the time - the second best LHW would have been a nice way to end a HoF career.Comment

Spinks and Nunn would probably be tougher opponents for Roy then Hagler,Leonard and Hearns.
Spinks was 6-3 with great power in his right hand,a natural 175 pounder and good speed.
Nunn was a 6-2 southpaw with great speed. He might not be able to match Roy speed for speed but he would be quick enough to make Roy respect him.Comment
