I don't think it is racist to support a fighter from your own geographical surroundings. It is natural, have you ever heard the saying that sport is a substitute for war? You support your country in throwing bombs at another country, on a much smaller and less destructive scale you support your country's sportsmen and women against the rest of the world. Actually if you go to the football world cup you'll actuall see people from all corners of the globe integrating and learning more about each other in a competitive sports setting (minus the few idiots of course).

I know this is a concept alien to most US citizens where there isn't the same tribalism in sports (I heard that Baseball was an exception??)

I don't know if this is a race example, but sometimes the obvious is there.
Example: You see 2 guys on the front page of sports Illustrated...both dressed in a tee-shirt and blue jeans.
The front page also says this.....
