The problem is, the level of opposition he's been facing is so weak, that fans and boxing analysts can't really gauge how good or bad he is.

True. His comeback hasn't really been all that impressive. When he first made his comeback he was overweight and in bad shape and I wondered why he would do that after all the trouble he had gone through to be allowed to fight again. He's made slow progress since then, but to be honest, I'll be very surprised if he ever gets back to where he was before.

Here it is. I interviewed Mesi last month and he is trying. He is having a hard time getting people who want to fight him. He is too big a risk for too little a reward.

the people at the WBC have said if he wins his next fight he will be once again ranked in the top ten. He was #1 when he got hurt.

I find it interesting that no one has a problem with Barrera fighting with his head injury, which was much worse, yet they don't want Mesi fighting.

I love his honesty. When I spoke to him he said that he believes that he can beat 2 out of the 4 champs. At least he knows his limitaions. And he is exciting. You never know what is going to happen in one of his fights.

Take this for what you will. Williamson, Barrett and Jirov made more money fighting Mesi(no title involved) than they did when they fought for world titles. He brings in money.

Mike, does Mesi's next opponent have to be at least a decent fighter with a good record or does it matter? I'd like to see Joe prove himself against a name fighter like Tye Fields, Brian Minto, Cal Brock, James Toney, etc. Also, I've heard rumors that Mesi is in talks with fringe contender Brian Minto. Any truth to these rumors?

Mesi said that Holyfield was an option for late in the summer.

The WBC needs to agree to the fighter, but it should be a journeyman of sorts. I wouldn't expect him to fight anyone of any stature whatsoever until he gets sanctioned in NY, NJ or NV. That is where the money is for him.

I would like to see him fight a bigger name, but I think that once he gets ranked in the top ten we will see it. One more fight is my prediction.

There's a fight I don't want to see. Holyfield will get pasted to the canvas if he steps into the ring with Mesi. I like both guys, but Holyfield is a good guy who just doesn't know when to call it quits. He was great in his day, but that was 5+ years ago. I'd rather get a tooth knocked out than watch Evander take another ass-beating from another big guy with heavy hands.

I guess my point is, should Mesi be ranked in the top ten for fighting guys like Ron Johnson, who really had no chance of winning and should've been in the ring with a hw in the first place? Also, any truth to the rumors of a possible bout with Brian Minto?

If Holyfield gets past Saverese later this month, look for a bout with him against newly crowned WBO champ Sultan Ibragimov...

im tired of the criticism of mesi, there are a lot better candidates for it...

people are making light of his opponents, but honestly... go talk **** about hasim rahman, he was world champ a year ago and now he is fighting taurus sykes... a guy whos ass mesi would easily whoop if he could get him to sign..

also, people can root for a guy like popo freitas who has quit twice in his career yet they cant find it in their heart to give credit to a guy who is so determined to fight that a subdural hematoma cannot stop him..

get a life mesi haters, just the fact that he gets in the ring shows that he has more heart than you could ever dream of having.

and dont forget either.... shannon briggs got a world title shot on the strength of being abraham okine, chris koval and sucker punching a 44 year old ray mercer...

dont hate mesi, hate the game

Hitman, I don't know if you're referring to my posts, I'm a big supporter of Mesi but very critical of his choice of opposition lately. Actually, I think that if he continues on this path, his talent and potential will be wasted. Some way or another he needs to find a credible opponent...

I understand the argument, but the way I see it goes like this:

He was #1 in the WBC before the injury, and now no one of substance will fight him until he can bring something to the table. The WBC see's this and with the top ten guys out there now, understand that he should be back in with them.

I don't blame him for being frustrated at finding no one to fight, but I also can't blame anyone for not fightnig him.

Why would Rahman want to risk fighting him now when he could get a shot at V. Klit later this year.

The Minto fight could be a good fight but I just don;t see the WBC signing off on it.

                      Nice post.

I think that people need to realize that he is a humble fighter that is trying to get a shot. Other heavy's have gotten shot after shot (barrett) and never deserved them.

As a fan of Mesi I will admit this also. I don;t think that he is the best heavyweight fighting today, but I do think that he is one of the best. He has a lot of skill and in a division wasting away with age, he is still a young guy.
