Mayweather and Cotto moved up because their bodies were out-growing junior-welter, Hatton moved up because TV forced him to move up. He's a squat guy, he shouldn't be able to compete with guys naturally bigger than him when he can still make the weight below no problem, yet he Beat Collazo the southpaw world welterweight champion.
Hatton is Not a P4P Level Figher

Is this the same Kostya Tszyu who was lb4lb #1 according to many? The same Kostya Tszyu who nobody gave Hatton a chance against? The same Kostya Tszyu who said at the pre-fight press conference "Kostya Tszyu 35 would beat Kostya Tszyu 25, I would destroy myself"?
That was probably the greatest win in the history of British Boxing.Comment

i think hatton was poundforpound , but his lifestyle and suspect matchmaking got him out of my list . Collazo as a first welterweight fight wasnt a good choice , but he should have steam rolled a frozen urango
let s see what he does against castilloComment

Yeah, I'm sure Duran was just outgrowing division after division and found himself fighting at 168 winning many titles along the way. He was James Toney before there was James Toney.
Duran and Hatton have the exact same frame. The only difference is Duran was a skilled fighter, Hatton is not...Comment

People need to understand that boxers dont perform to their best in every fight they have. Look at any great boxer that ever lived and they have bad performances somewhere along their record.Going life and death with Luis Collazo, a guy that a 35-year-old Mosley completely outclassed, showed the world that Hatton just isn't a world class fighter. That's why he will never step foot again at 147. He'll retire when he can't make 140 anymore...
Any P4P level fighter should be able to handle moving up one division without a problem. Mayweather has done it many times. Pacquiao has done it many times. Winky had no problem moving up to middleweight and arguably beating Jermain Taylor. Barrera has moved up three divisions. Hopkins even skipped a division at 41 and dominated Tarver. Just over the weekend, Marquez moved up to 122 and beat the RING champion there. The list goes on and on.
If Hatton is a world class, P4P level figher, why did he struggle mightily with a fringe contender like Collazo? Why did he decide not to stick around welterweight and prepare his body properly for the division? Why did Hatton run back to 140 when there are absolutely zero meaningful fights to be made there?
Just because hatton had a 1 below his standard performance at147 doesnt mean to say he will struggle again if he fights at 147. Hattons next performance at that weight if he chooses to box at that weight might be phenomenal. You should judge a boxer at how they perform at their best. He performed pretty good against Kostya so we know for sure what he is capable of. He beat Collazo anyway and is unbeaten, so why cant he be a p4p guy. Guys who lose have in the past retained p4p status. Hatton migh not be able to step up much in weight because he is naturally a stocky guy and cant really get bigger without compromising something.
He dropped back down in weight because he can easily make the weight. When he trains hard, he falls down to that weight. Will he box again at 147? He probably will! And dont go on about dropping down in weight. He can so easily step up again, and this time properly if a fight becomes available that is worthwhile. He knows in his mind what he did wrong first time around.Last edited by hugh grant; 03-07-2007, 08:45 PM.Comment
