in my opinion:-
Roy Jones junior - ducked the best in his era and made a career out of humiliating no hopers. One victory against Hopkins early in his career does not make him great in my opinion.
Ali was the greatest, in the sense that he never ducked anyone...something that most boxers today and in the not so distant past can`t claim.Last edited by me2007; 03-07-2007, 09:31 AM.Comment

I think James Toney is grossly overrated. Sure he's been world class for years and years but if he was ever an "elite" fighter it was only fleetingly, he generally lost to the best fighters he faced. His chin is granite though, and that's helped him move up the weights.Comment

I don't know who is the most over-rated fighter of all time. But I think Sonny Liston's a little over-rated by those who have him in their top ten greatest heavy's of all time. Two wins over Patterson, and a short title reign just aren't enough for me.Comment

Again, I must raise this issue. Fans and critics alike INVARIABLY recognise Ali as being one of the top 3-5 (minimum) greatest boxers of all time. Therefore the casual fan listing him at the top is not overrating him by a great deal. It is perhaps showing favouritism, but thats all.
There are people out there at the moment claiming that the likes of Mayweather (I only use him as the example because I dont currently remember who else people are saying is the 'greatest of all time' at the moment, though I'm sure that there are some) is the greatest fighter of all time. This is a guy who realistically nobody in the profession, nor analysts, nor critics are currently ranking anywhere near the top 10 of all time. And out of the guys who have had it said about them recently...Mayweather is one of the most credible shouts.
Outside of top 10 but claimed at 1.
Inside the top 5 but claimed at 1.
You can see what I'm saying, right?Comment

I really can't believe most of these posts. LOL Ali? Kostya?
Kostya was the best at his weight for years, undisputed. Fought many of his key fights in hostile environments, in his opponent's country, and went for years and years fighting the top fighters at his weight without losing. Name any glaring omissions from his record at 140. He lost to Phillips, yes, and Phillips wasn't in the picture when he came back- so why would he fight him and not take advantage of fighting higher ranked guys- his purpose was to become undisputed, not revenge. And the people who say "His only win was against Zab," they simply were not following the sport back then. They're looking at boxingrec with hindsight, trying to piece together the boxing scene at the time looking at what some fighters he faced have done since then. That's not how it works, folks.
As for Ali, as I said, anyone who has him as the most overrated is simply insane. The one guy who said "Well, it's because 95% of the general public thinks he's the best ever" Yeah? And? The reason why they think that is he never ducked anybody, put himself on a pedestal and dared anyone to knock him off, was at the forefront of political and social issues for years (at great peril to his popularity and pocketbook), and traveled all over the world to make fights, fighting many contenders in their hometowns and defending his title in hostile environments. He was the "greatest" fighter of all time, and that doesn't mean he would beat any fighter p4p, necessarily, but "greatness" is the whole package: skill, popularity, name recognition, drawing power, competition, results, resiliancy, etc etc. It's an amalgamation of all those categories, and there is NO fighter in history who is truly greater. Yeah, the general public may rate him higher than SRR or some other guys, and he earned that with tireless promotion, social commentary, and of course most importantly taking out top competition in the ring for years and years.
Go back and read what I said about his career vs. Roy Jones. That's about as simple as I can put it.Comment
