I definitely have some insight on this one! First of all people that box for real have some pretty clear advantages:

1)Through sparring they gain the ability to take punches and punishment.
2)Their nervous level before an engagement is lesser because they spar. This means they operate more efficiently once the fists or feet fly.
3)Their timing (through sparring) is much better.
4.)Their power is usually much better.

The martial arts such as MMA, Muay Thai or kickboxing offer some of the advantages I just mentioned for the boxer.

Wrestlers or judo can be a tough problem for a boxer, BUT these guys need to have entry skills to really deal with a striker.

I think some of the boxers in the pro ranks could do well in a street fight or against some of the martial artists. Fighters like Mike Tyson, Ricardo Mayorga, Shane Mosley, Manny Pacquiao, or Jeff Lacy to name a few. These are all agressive guys that hit really hard.
The boxers that pace themselves and BOX too much may not do well in a street fight because you would have to get your shots in immediately against a wrestler or judo, jujitsu guy that was determined to tie you up and throw you or to do a double leg takedown.

Boxers vs. most other martial arts: Karate, Tae Kwon Do, or some Kung Fu styles would be very advantageous to boxers because alot of these styles have no realistic sparring or proving grounds for their techniques. Unless the person is always using this stuff in an actual fight in his daily life.

    Anyway, those are my thoughts.

"Fighting on the street has a lot more to do with the talent you've got, not what discipline you train under"

Indeed. Also weapons are commonly used in a street fight. At least in mine when I was a kid in Chicago they were. Clubs, knifes, rocks, brass nucks...and the like. One hit and the fight was done.

Boxing is excellent in a street fight, but only if the boxer has some experience against streetfighters. Many boxers were streetfighters initially.....

In a street fight, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.

As far as what descipline is best? THEY ALL HAVE PROS & CONS. Don't be so single-minded.

But to those who disrespect boxing, GO **** YOURSELVES.

I have friends that train in judo and think they would kick my ass if they get a hold of me.

BUT YOU THINK I WONT PICK A SPOT ON HIS FACE & SHATTER HIS BONES AS HE COMES IN?

Boxers are trully the top conditioned athletes in the world, hands down. These guys train becuase their lives are on the line.

AND IF YOU THINK BOXING IS WEAK COMPARED TO MMA.

THATS WHY THE #1 GUY (CHUCK LIDDELL) IS KNOWN AS A "GREAT" STRIKER!

You guys are idiots. This guy who rules the MMA does it with his fist. HOW FUNNY IS THAT?

Boxing has been around since the 4th century BC when the Greeks competed in boxing matches in the original Oylmpics.

BOXING IS OVER 2000 YEARS OLD. I mean skilled boxing, with technique, not monkey fights.

Get in the ring, see for yourself, and give boxing the respect it deserves.

Well from what I read, you guys are saying a boxer is used to fighting in the ring. I don't really feel like typing a lot. But I am a boxer much like the rest of us. and we all know the rules and regulations of the ring. Take away the rules and regulations you have a boxer with no limitations.

So let me put it this way

            Average joe vs boxer

Boxer - Knows how to punch, Well trained, stance allows movement. even if grappled you can push off and strike, can take a punch, can move his head, has the cardio etc etc.

Average Joe - Doesn't know how to keep his hands up. Throws wild punches. Has no stance. Most likely doesn't know what a hard punch is.

By the way, 8 pounds of pressure per square inch to break a jaw.

            Its not that much.

Well thats about all I feel like typing so in other words Im saying

The boxer is most likely gonna win.
But Its a game of chance.
            So you never know.

As a Martial Artist/Boxer i really can't get into specifics without writing something extremely long.

But i will say this: Fight a boxer, box a fighter....

The most "styles" someone is exposed to, ie: boxing, karate, BJJ, wrestling, arnis, kung-fu, the more potential someone has to defending themselves properly.

It's not really about "styles" anymore, it's based on how an individual trains, how he matures as a fighter and experience he gains.

                Everyone can be beat.

Someone post the video of the boxer kicking the **** out of those two guys at the same time in a street fight (if its been posted and I missed it my bad.) If you can throw a good 1-2, you can murder 99% of people in a street fight. Wrestling isnt a street fight. It's wrestling.

He believes that other combat sports such as karate, olympic wrestling, judo, mixed martial arts are highly superior compared to boxing and that boxers outside the ring cannot handle their own when they are not in the ring. He pretty much believes that boxing is the lowest form of fighting technique. I got really aggrevated by this and told him that boxing is very disciplined and that he wouldn't stand a chance against a boxer in the ring or outside the ring. He then responded by saying something dumb like "well boxers only punch, so in a street fight, I'll kick him in his knee and tackle him." By a response like that, I was really mad and also dissapointed thinking that a lot of non-boxing fans feel this way?
Do any of your friends who are not boxing fans or boxing fans think that boxing is the lowest form of fighting technique?
hahaha. just wait till you see him the next day after getting in a fight with a boxer, his two eyes will be black and he'll have a broken nose...

its not like fighting a heavy bag, he's not just gonna wait there for you to kick him and take him to the ground. Boxers have fast reaction times from sparring to things like that and I'm sure somebody who has such a vague plan he'll probably have his hands low get hit in the chin.

Although, to be honest, you have to realize, boxing is a sport. It takes technique, strategy, and it has rules. Streetfighting has no rules.
Any boxer can streetfight, but not any streetfighter can box.

Even when you look at savage guys like Mike Tyson, and you think he can beat up anyone in a streetfight, his fighting was all about technique even though he makes it look like hes just killing the other guy with random punches to someone who doesn't understand boxing. People like that have never stepped inside a ring, never had the loss of energy from their arms so that they can't even keep their hands up to protect their faces, never lost their legs...and above all, never been hit in the face.So they don't understand.

And finally, Bruce Lee, probably respected as the greatest martial artist ever, his "style" jeet kune which is essentially streetfighting, takes most of its punches from boxing and Bruce Lee respected boxing a lot.

so next time you see your friend just quote everything i said and he'll be like lol
