  • street fight vs. boxing

I had an argument today with a friend that believes that boxers cannot hold their own in a street fight. He believes that other combat sports such as karate, olympic wrestling, judo, mixed martial arts are highly superior compared to boxing and that boxers outside the ring cannot handle their own when they are not in the ring. He pretty much believes that boxing is the lowest form of fighting technique. I got really aggrevated by this and told him that boxing is very disciplined and that he wouldn't stand a chance against a boxer in the ring or outside the ring. He then responded by saying something dumb like "well boxers only punch, so in a street fight, I'll kick him in his knee and tackle him." By a response like that, I was really mad and also dissapointed thinking that a lot of non-boxing fans feel this way?
Do any of your friends who are not boxing fans or boxing fans think that boxing is the lowest form of fighting technique?

Some idiots think that because boxers are not permitted to use takedowns and kicks in the ring they are somehow not allowed to use these techniques out of the ring. Boxers can handle their own outside the ring, because it usually only takes one shot with decent power to end a confrontation but the truth is than any sort of combat training can give you an advantage over someone without training. I would pick a boxer over practitioners of many other martial arts in a fight purely because to actually box even at a novice amateur level requires a good deal of skill and dedication, something which is lacking in non-contact competition. A good wrestler or a good judoka would give hell to anyone in a fight, but on average the dangers are not as great and so the dedication doesn't need to be as great. I have competed in boxing and in judo and I can honestly say that boxing is tougher.

In an actual street fight though you can usually tell the one who has the experience in combat sports. They are either the one finishing it, or the one simply walking away.

Boxing is great for streetfights, as long as you have a little place to move around. Like the previous guy said, a streetfight is often won by the person who lands the first shot, and a good boxer will probably land it.

Martial arts? It depends, you can get a blackbelt in most martial arts without ever fighting. Those who do some full contact stuff are killing machines, but those who only hit the air are sissies.

Against a wrestler? Well, punching is faster and easier than grabbing someone.

A guy walks into a dojo, cus he got beat up in front of his friends, he got mauled by a guy half his size, his ***** left him for a jock with a motorcycle, or cus his daddy called him a ***ot. He needs someone to teach him to be a man, and he comes from a decent enough living

Boxing gym? fuhgetaboutit. Someone who'd be labeled as a raw talent is something else. He's already the baddest kid on the block, he's already beaten the **** out of everyone who started **** with him in the park, now he wants to make millions of dollars doing it 'cus he sure as hell doesn't have jack **** now.

A little cliche? Sure. There are exceptions on both sides, but in general that counts for A LOT of people.

Tell your buddy to go un-**** himself, because I'm curious as to how he thinks any of these pricks who hit up their dojo twice a week in between office hours and their evening tango classes with their fiance would even stand a chance against a habitual ass kicker who has nothing else on his mind but fighting his way to the top.

Hell, throughout history there has always been news coverage of champs who have gotten into it outside of the ring, many times against MULTIPLE assailants, and for the most part it was always the other guys who were laid the **** out or running their asses off.

I even remember watching an old America's Most Wanted episode about a veteran boxer who was gunned down by gang members because he'd constantly be beating the **** out of them whenever they were trying to start some drama with the kids in the neighborhood. They had tried to get back at the guy on more than one occasion, each time bringing an extra homie or two for back up, only to get whipped again by this 30-something year old gym vet. In the end, the only thing they could do was sneak up on him on blast him when he wasn't looking. Sad story, maybe some of you remember it.

The fact is this: a good pair of fists, and an innate sense of ass-kicking aggression goes a LONG way when handling garbage on the street, but it's something you've either got or you don't. And it's something that most of these dojo hopping, well-to-do, martial art nerds will never have. So they make themselves feel better, by bringing up ****** statements about how "boxers only use their fists, so they'd get mauled in a street fight by anyone who practices [insert other style here]". they point out the limits of boxing as a sport, but disregard the talent and upbringing of the boxing athlete. They pretend as if every boxer out there has never seen a street fight before, when ironically they're more than likely the ones with the rough life. They then resort to citing ****** examples of fictional fights they've been in talking about how badly they beat some 10 year boxing veteran on the streets, or even point out awful examples of complete nobodies on youtube with clips titled "me vs my friend who is a good boxer". It's this new generation of insecure sissies that are behind this anti-boxing crusade. It doesn't take much to realize that 90% of these clowns were on the whole X-treme sports craze just a while back.

Fighting on the street has a lot more to do with the talent you've got, not what discipline you train under.
